Hometown heroes lead Aggies to win at SMC

Final Stats

MORAGA, Calif. - Junior Courtney Neff notched career highs of six goals and three assists while senior Elizabeth Landry barely missed her own single-game school record of 12 draw controls, leading UC Davis to a 19-11 win over Saint Mary's in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at SMC Recreation Field Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies finish out their 2015 season on a winning note, moving to 4-13 overall and 3-6 in MPSF play. The Gaels drop to 0-15 for the year and 0-9 in conference.

The victory provided highlights for all UC Davis players from the Lamorinda area, of which Saint Mary's sits at the southern point. Neff, an Acalanes High School product, bested her previous high of five goals set against the Gaels exactly one year ago. Landry, also of Acalanes, provided three goals to go with her 11 draw controls. Freshman Hannah Friel, a 2014 grad of nearby Miramonte High in Orinda, posted her first collegiate two-goal contest while adding an assist. Junior and Miramonte grad Mary Doyle picked up four drawn controls and scored a goal of her own. Finally, freshman and Acalanes alumna Kate Fellner hit her first career goal in the final minute of the contest.

Sophomore Melissa Kellan added four goals and junior Ellie Delich chipped in another two to contribute to UC Davis' season-high output in scoring. The Aggies dominated the overall shooting at 39-to-13, outdrew the Gaels by a 21-12 margin, transitioned at a perfect 12-for-12 clip and committed five fewer turnovers with 14. Sophomore Tess Kevorkian posted three of her team's 14 caused turnovers, including a pair of interceptions that immediately ended Saint Mary's attacking threats.

Freshman Jocelyn Lubert scored four goals to lead the Gaels while freshman Claire Healy posted a game-high six assists.

The two teams battled somewhat evenly in the early going, with the Gaels taking a 2-1 lead during the first 10 minutes. Neff and Kellan put UC Davis back on top with back-to-back goals before Jocelyn Lubert tied the contest at 3-3 in the 17th minute. However, Neff scored two goals in the span of less than 30 seconds to ignite a 10-1 run. The Aggies held a 7-4 edge at the break, and continued to extend to 13-4 during the first nine minutes of the second half. Neff had three goals and all three of her assists during that span.

The Gaels managed flurries of three unanswered midway through the second half and four straight down the final stretch, but never reduced their deficit by fewer than six. Delich scored twice in a late 5-0 run, including a goal on a backhanded shot with less than 10 minutes to play.

Landry set the school single-game record of 12 against Long Island in her freshman year, and appeared to be in position to shatter it in her career finale. However, she incurred a second yellow card with 20 minutes to go, ending her day at 11.

Attacker Troy Cragen (two draw controls), defender Allie Lehner (two caused turnovers, three ground balls), defender Sara Quero (one caused turnover, two ground balls), Kai Murphy (two goalie saves) and attacker Sam Axenroth also contributed in their final UC Davis games.
