DAVIS, Calif. - Junior midfielder Courtney Neff scored three goals while Mary Doyle added two more, but UC Davis could not overcome an 11-0 first-half deficit in a 15-6 loss to 15th-ranked Stanford in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Wednesday night.
The Aggies fall to 3-13 overall and 2-6 in conference. The Cardinal improves to 12-2 for the year and clinches the top seed in the MPSF tournament with a perfect 8-0 MPSF ledger.
Wednesday's game was the season home finale for UC Davis, which honored seniors Meghan Jordan, Rachael Mack, Elizabeth Landry, Allie Lehner, Sara Quero, Troy Cragen and Kai Murphy prior to the contest. Murphy notched 11 saves, including eight in a first half that saw Stanford outshoot its hosts by a 24-2 margin.
Quero picked up three ground balls, moving her career total to 101. She becomes the first Aggie since Molly Peterson in 2010 to surpass the century mark in that category. Landry had a team-high four caused turnovers plus two assists and five draw controls for the Aggies. Sophomore Melissa Kellan had the team's sixth goal.
For Stanford, senior midfielder Hannah Farr had four goals and an assist. Junior Mackenzie Tesie provided two goals and an assist while senior Rachel Ozer led all players with three assists.
UC Davis put just one shot on frame during the first half, when Ellie Delich fired a sidewinder at the five hole of Stanford goalie Allie DaCar. The Cardinal freshman stopped it for her only save of the game. She handed the goalkeeping chores to junior Katie Wiseman in the second half.
The Aggies got on the board in the 36th minute when Melissa Kellan collected a high pass from Landry in front of the cage. Kellan pulled it down, then sent the shot in. Landry assisted Doyle with 21 minutes left for the second UC Davis goal. Neff hit three straight in a 4-0 stretch during the final nine minutes to bring the score to 15-5. Doyle finally cut the deficit to single digits on her drive from a free position with 1:10 left in the contest.
UC Davis outshot Stanford by a 13-7 margin after the break and reduced its turnovers from 15 in the first half to eight in the second.
The Aggies close out their season with a 1 p.m. game at Saint Mary's on Saturday.
