Beach Invitational results

NORWALK, Calif. - Nathan Strum's third-place finish in the 800-meter run led three Aggies in the top 16 as the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams finished their stay in Southern California this weekend with competition at the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State, on Saturday.

Katie Barber tied for ninth in the high jump, posting a top-10 finish for the Aggie women. UC Davis competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific and the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday before sending a dozen Aggies to the LBSU meet, which was held at Cerritos College.

UC Davis standout sprinter Ashley Marshall remained at Mt. SAC on Saturday for the invitational section of the women's 100-meter dash. She turned in a wind-aided time of 11.22 seconds that is faster than her school-record mark of 11.34 seconds but will not supplant that because of the wind.

Strum was coming off a 15th-place showing in the 1,500 at Mt. SAC and turned around to race the 800 on Saturday. He was timed in 1 minutes, 49.11 seconds, his second straight 800 race with a sub-1:50 time. Strum went 1:49.04 last week at Arizona State.

UC Davis had three other entries in Saturday's 800 and all four were among the top 22 finishers in a field that had 112 competitors overall. Nicholas Ratto took 15th in 1:51.15, Trevor Ehlenhach was 16th in 1:51.30 and Cody Nguyen crossed in 22nd place in 1:52.36.

Barber cleared 5 feet, 5 inches on her second attempt on Saturday before moving up to 5-7 and successfully going over that on her third attempt. She then tried for 5-8.75 which would've put her near her school record of 5-9.25 but she was unable to make the height in three tries.

Marshall finished third in her heat which was won by Jasmine Todd of Oregon (11.03) and had three other runners from USC as well as an international competitor from Brazil. Jenna Prandini of Oregon won the high-caliber event in a wind-legal time of 10.92 seconds.

UC Davis will return home before heading to Berkeley next Friday for the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal. The Aggies will stay in the Bay Area for the Brutus Hamilton Open on Saturday.
