DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis senior Elizabeth Landry scored a team-high three goals and broke the conference's career draw controls record, but visiting Oregon scored eight unanswered to claim a 10-7 win over the Aggies in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies slip to 3-10 for the year and 2-3 in MPSF games. The Ducks improve to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Freshman Kelsey DeJesus, junior Ellie Delich, junior Mary Doyle and sophomore Melissa Kellan each added one goal. Kellan also had two assists, with Landry and freshman Hannah Friel chipping in one apiece. Senior Kai Murphy and redshirt freshman Lauren Ali platooned in front of the cage for save totals of four and three, respectively. Senior Allie Lehner notched two of her team's eight caused turnovers to supplement three draw controls and four ground balls. Junior Morgan Sissler scooped up five ground balls, one more than Lehner for the team high.
Landry led all players with four draw controls, raising her season total to 64 and her career sum to 227. She passes Rachel Minarovich, who totaled 226 draw controls at her stops at Fresno State and Saint Mary's. Landry also raised her career scoring total to 146 goals, moving her into the league's all-time top 10.
Senior Devon Frazer scored three goals off the bench to lead Oregon. However, the Ducks suffered a tough break when Frazer had to leave the game due to an injury in the final minute. Olivia Pyne and Carly O'Connell added two goals for UO while freshman Cambi Cukar assisted on a pair of scores.
After Pyne put the Ducks on the board in the second minute, Landry netted back-to-back goals as part of a 3-0 Aggie run. Friel found Delich alone in front of an empty net in the 16th minute to put UC Davis up to a 4-2 lead. However, that began a 36-minute scoring drought for the Aggies. Oregon scored four straight to hold a 6-4 lead at halftime, then extended its streak to eight unanswered in crafting a 10-4 edge into the 51st minute.
The Aggies fought back with three goals in the final 8:29. Landry and Kellan assisted each other on goals then Doyle converted an eight-meter chance with 1:16 remaining. However, Oregon managed to chew up minutes in that final stretch to maintain its lead.
The transition game proved to be the key factor for both sides. The Ducks cleared successfully on 16 of 18 opportunities while the Aggies struggled to 10-for-22. As a result, Oregon held a 24-12 shooting advantage in the contest.
Sunday's game begins a four-game homestand for UC Davis. USC (Friday), San Diego State (April 19) and Stanford (April 22) will pay visits to Aggie Stadium during the subsequent 10 days.
