BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior Courtney Neff scored five goals, including three during the Aggies' five-goal explosion in overtime, to help UC Davis set a school record for shooting percentage in a 13-8 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse victory over California at Memorial Stadium Friday night.
The Aggies win their second straight, improving to 3-9 overall and 2-2 in conference. The Golden Bears dip to 2-10 for the season and 1-4 in MPSF play.
Overall, UC Davis shot 13 of 18 for a .722 clip, breaking the old record of .704, set against San Diego State in 2013. Sophomore attacker Melissa Kellan finished 4-for-4, including two goals in her team's 4-0 start and another in the extra frame. Elizabeth Landry chipped in two goals and won a game-high nine draw controls. Oddly, on a day designated as National Sibling Day, her younger sister, Chloe, led Cal with three draw controls.
Mary Doyle and Kelsey DeJesus each scored goals while Hannah Friel had the Aggies' lone assist. Senior Kai Murphy tallied eight saves in front of the cage. Senior Sara Quero and junior Morgan Sissler had two caused turnovers apiece.
Cal held the favorable margin in shots (24-18), ground balls (21-14), turnovers (15-21) and clears (11-for-22 to UC Davis' 9-for-13). However, the Aggies won 16 of the 25 draws in addition to their unprecedented shooting efficiency.
UC Davis strormed to a 4-0 start in the first 6:08, only to surrender four straight during the next 13 minutes. Bella Huther had two of her five goals for the Golden Bears in that run, equalizing in the 20th minute on an assist from Gaby Christman. Doyle answered with an eight-meter conversion in the 22nd to keep the Aggies on top with a 5-4 halftime edge.
However, Huther scored two more in a 3-0 start to the second, giving the Bears a 7-5 advantage with 16:34 left in regulation. The lead changed hands once again when Neff, DeJesus and Kellan scored in the 46th, 47th and 50th minutes, putting the Aggies back on top -- that is, until Huther hit her fifth on an eight-meter chance just more than nine minutes left in the half. The two teams battled to just one shot for the remainder of the period.
Cal had a chance to take the win in regulation when an Aggie turnover in their attacking third led to a fast break the other way. However, Quero caused a turnover against Sasha Anielski in the final seconds to end any possible threat.
The Aggies dominated the extra time. Sissler's steal after the initial draw led to Neff's go-ahead not a minute into overtime. Elizabeth Landry had two draw controls and Murphy posted a save as part of the final 5-0 flourish.
Friday's win ends a run of six straight road contests for UC Davis. The Aggies begin a four-game homestand on Sunday against Oregon. First draw at Aggie Stadium is noon.
