Big West champs collect league-high six conference awards

March 9, 2015

IRVINE, Calif. - UC Davis men's basketball received a league-high six awards when the Big West announced its all-conference teams and specialty award winners on Monday. In addition to senior guard Corey Hawkins, who was selected to the conference's first team for the second time in his career, senior guard/forward Josh Ritchart earned second team recognition and junior forward Josh Fox received honorable mention.

In addition to their all-conference selections, Hawkins received Big West Player of the Year, and Fox collected Sixth Man of the Year. Rounding out the Aggies' awards haul, their biggest since joining the league in 2007, was Jim Les who earned Coach of the Year accolades.

With his 20.6 points per game average, Hawkins is the conference's scoring champion for the second time in the last three years. Ranked No. 7 nationally in scoring, Hawkins has led the nation with his three-point field goal percentage since the start of league play.

The Goodyear, Ariz., native will enter this week's tournament with the Big West's top three-point shooting and scoring marks - two of seven statistical categories that includes Hawkins' name. Among all league players, the senior guard is also ranked No. 2 in three-point field goals per game (2.9), No. 5 with his field goal (.498) and free throw percentage (.829), No. 7 in assists (3.5 apg) and steals (1.3 spg), and No. 13 in rebounding (5.1 rpg).

"One of the big reasons why we have been able to enjoy a successful year is because of Corey Hawkins. He has a great work ethic and set the tone for us starting with last summer's workouts," said Les. "He worked hard not only to make himself a better player, but to challenge everyone else on this team.

"We love to see him recognized not only for his talent and abilities, but for his leadership skills and work ethic."

The No. 2 scorer in the 104-year history of the program - he recorded 1,623 points throughout his three seasons as an Aggie - Hawkins was recognized by ESPN earlier this season as one of the top 25 players in the country earlier this season.

Forced to redshirt last season due to injury, Ritchart returned to form this season to help UC Davis earn its first-ever Big West championship and undefeated home record as a Division I program.

"To not only battle back from injury, but return as a bigger, better, faster and stronger player is a testament to his mental and physical approach [to the game]. I think he grew as a person, and player, during the year he was forced to sit, and we are reaping the rewards of that year," Les said.

One of only 21 Aggies in school history to score 1,000 or more points, Ritchart leads all active Big West Players with 227 career three-pointers and is another reason why his team has led the nation with its three-point percentage since the start of the calendar year.

Ranked No. 5 in the conference with his .455 three-point clip, Ritchart is just as dangerous from anywhere within the arc since as evident from his .510 field goal percentage - the second-highest in the conference.

Hailing from Auburn, Calif., Ritchart is also No. 8 in the conference with his three-point field goals made per game mark and No. 13 in scoring averaging 11.9 points per game.

A matchup nightmare for opposing coaches - guards, who can match his quickness struggle to deal with his size, post players find it challenging to negate his speed and agility - has helped Ritchart collect more than 500 rebounds throughout his career.

The senior swingman is the team's second-highest scorer (11.9 ppg) and holds the third-highest rebounding average behind Hawkins and Fox- the third Aggie named to an all-conference team.

The Big West's Sixth Man of the Year also received all-conference honors for the first time in his career when league announced its honorable mention list.

"He's been a rock coming off the bench," said Les. "Whatever this team needs, he provides."

In his first season as an Aggie, Fox is averaging 9.4 ppg and leads all players with 132 total rebounds. Often drawing defensive assignments against other team's starting post players, Fox quickly became a fan-favorite due to his heart, hustle and willingness to compete against anyone who dares to enter the paint.

In addition to holding the team's second-highest rebounding average (4.6 rpg), the junior from Daily City, Calif., also has great court vision. His 34 assists are the most earned by any Aggie post player.

"Whether its scoring, rebounding or making plays, he can handle the ball and we run our offense through him," said Les. "It doesn't matter who we ask him to guard, we know he is going to battle defensively.

"He is a huge part of this team's success and it is great that the other coaches around the league recognize that."

Responsible for the most successful turnaround in the nation this season - the Aggies' +15 win differential is the NCAA's No. 1 figure and second-highest in Big West history - Les led UC Davis to a 24-5 overall record and 14-2 league mark to help the school capture its inaugural Big West Championship.

"I am blessed every day to work with my assistant coaches, Mark Darnall, my director of basketball operations, Alex Edwards and Bill Morosco, who are the team's video assistants. These guys bust their tails every day to make me look good, I'm very appreciative of their efforts," said Les.

Under Les' guidance, UC Davis posted a 14-0 record at home and set new Division I school records for the most overall, conference, road and home wins in a season. Besides their undefeated mark inside the Pavilion, the Aggies were the only league school to record a winning road record (10-5). UC Davis also became the first school in the 46-year history of the Big West to finish last one season and win the outright championship in the next.

"This award really should be the `Team of the Year.' I'm not here without the hard work, and commitment, this team put in. It's a joy to coach these guys, I'm lucky to be around everyone."
