UC Davis falls to perennial power Johns Hopkins

Final Stats

BALTIMORE - Junior midfielder Mary Doyle scored two goals while senior Allie Lehner led the Aggie ground game with two caused turnovers and three ground balls, but UC Davis could not recover from an early deficit in falling to 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 15-5, in women's collegiate lacrosse action at Homewood Field Saturday evening.

The Aggies fall to 1-7 for the year. The Blue Jays improve to 8-2, winning their sixth straight.

Doyle shot 2-for-2 and had three draw controls, while junior Courtney Neff, sophomore Melissa Kellan and senior Elizabeth Landry each added one score. Landry also had an assist and a team-leading six draw controls.

Juniors Jenna Reifler and Kristen Cannon each scored four goals to lead JHU offensively, completing hat tricks in an 11-0 start to the contest.

Ball control factored heavily in the Aggies' first-half deficit. They won nine of the 14 draws before the break but Hopkins' defense resulted in a 2-for-6 success rate in transitions and a total of 13 UC Davis turnovers. The Aggies managed just two shots in the first 27 minutes of play, both of which were stopped by JHU goalie KC Emerson. The Blue Jays shot 11-for-22 during that same span.

UC Davis finally cracked the seal on the Jay's cage with 2:44 remaining in the first. Neff scored on a second-chance opportunity after Landry had her initial shot blocked. Lehner's steal against Hopkins defender Claudia Flister provided one last possession for the Aggies before the break. Doyle hit an eight-meter attempt with 18 ticks remaining to bring the score to 11-2.

Cannon made it 12-2 for JHU on the first ball of the second half, but UC Davis managed to control possession for long stretches of the period, one of which eventually resulted in a Landry feed to Kellan in the 39th minute for the third Aggie goal. Doyle scored her second goal of the game with roughly seven minutes left to play, then Lehner's draw control on the next possession set the stage for Landry a minute later.

The Aggies finished the game with a 14-8 edge on draws but committed 20 total turnovers and cleared just 5 of 11 transitions (compared to JHU's 14-for-17 rate).

UC Davis begins Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play in games at Colorado and Denver on April 3 and 5, respectively.
