March 28, 2015 Results: Texas Relays | Bobcat Invitational
DAVIS, Calif. - Senior sprinter Ashley Marshall won the 200-meter dash in a season-best time of 23.30 seconds on Saturday at the Bobcat Invitational while Ben Parodi had a big PR in the shot put as the pair highlighted the UC Davis men's and women's track and field's final day at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational.
Forty miles to the north in Austin, Raquel Lambdin and Nicholas Ratto went up against elite middle-distance fields at the Texas Relays and had solid finishes on Saturday. Lambdin was in the top section of the women's 1,500-meter run while Ratto took sixth in the Jerry Thompson Invitational mile run. Both races were broadcasting nationally on the Longhorn Network.
UC Davis had several members of its sprints corps in action at Texas State and Marshall, who placed second in the 100 (11.45) on Friday, was strong again on Saturday. She challenged her school record of 23.25 in the 200 before capturing first place among the 55 competitors in 23.30. Unattached runner Candace Jackson (23.48) was second.
Marshall was joined in the top 10 by fellow senior standout Cekarri Nixon who took seventh in 24.15. Nixon, who is ranked third all-time in the event at UC Davis, just missed her PR of 24.10 which she's run twice in her career. Emma Redick, coming off her strong performance in the 400 hurdles a day earlier, was 11th in 24.53, debuting her on the all-time 200 list in a tie for sixth. Holly Miller rounded out an impressive showing for the Aggies, placing 18th in 24.79.
The four Aggies also teamed up for a win in the 4x100, posting a time of 45.59 that puts the quartet No. 5 on the program's all-time list. Veronica Smart provided a highlight on the field, finishing third in the shot put with a mark of 47-4.25, her second-best throw of the season.
Parodi, a senior from Pacifica, entered the meet with a career-best throw of 53 feet, 9.75 inches in the shot put. However, he unleashed an effort of 55-6.25 on his second throw on Saturday to vault from No. 9 all-time at UC Davis into a tie for sixth with Ryan Frank (2005). Senior Brandon Greenberg, who's fifth on the all-time list, placed fifth at the Bobcat Invitational with a mark of 54-1.
Also for the men, Jason Chandler was 11th in the 200 (21.78, wind-aided) while Corey Hobbs (22.09, wind-aided). Tori Edwards added a 13th-place finish in the 100 hurdles in 15.28.
UC Davis has a busy weekend of meets lined up next week with scheduled competitions at Sacramento State (Mondo Mid-Major Challenge), San Francisco State (Distance Carnival), the Stanford Invitational and the UCLA Invitational.
