STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Luke Vivolo and senior Mike Brockington shot 2-under 68 and 69, respectively, on Friday morning and the UC Davis men's golf team continued to challenge as the Aggies remained in tin contention with the leaders after two rounds at The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course.
UC Davis, which was 6 under in Thursday's opening round after playing in the afternoon wave, went off in the morning on Friday and followed up with a 2-under 278. The Aggies were the only team among the 12 playing in the morning to break par. That left them 8 under overall and in sixth place after 36 holes.
UAB, ranked 38th, shot a strong 11-under score in the second round to take a four-shot lead at 19 under. UNLV, which has the individual leader in John Oda (-8), is 15 under and in second, while No. 32 SMU is third at 13 under after going 12 under on Friday. First-day leader TCU, ranked 33rd and one of eight teams ranked in Golfstat's top 40, was 5 over on Friday and is fourth at 11 under. Host Stanford is 9 under and just one shot ahead of the Aggies.
Vivolo had the hot round for the Aggies on Friday, carding birdies on his second and fourth holes - both par-4 holes - to quickly get to 2 under. He added pars on 11 of his next 12 holes while mixing in a birdie on the par-5 first hole, to move to three shots under par. He had his lone bogey soon after to give a stroke back to the course. Vivolo is 1 under overall.
Brockington broke 70 for the second consecutive day after opening with a 67 on Thursday. Starting with the rest of his teammates on the par-5 10th hole, Brockington had a bogey but then rebounded to birdie the 12th and 14th holes to surge into red numbers. He picked up another birdie on the par-3 third hole, followed with a bogey on the next but then had pars on his remaining five holes to shoot 69. He's 4 under for the tournament.
Matt Seramin had a 70, Ryan Han shot 71 and Patrick Soli carded a 72 to round out the Aggies' scoring. Seramin finished at par for the round but had just eight pars on the day. He balanced his scorecard with five birdies and five bogeys and is 5 over with a round to go. Han is just 1 over after a strong finish that saw him birdie two of his last three holes.
Soli opened The Goodwin with a spectacular 66 on Thursday. Three consecutive birdies covering the 15th through 18th holes on Friday helped him make his turn a shot under par before late bogeys moved him to 2 over for the day and 2 under overall.
Brockington is tied for 12th, Soli is tied for 19th and Vivolo is tied for 21st. Han is in a tie for 42nd while Seramin is tied for 69th. Nicholas Noya, who was playing as an individual for the Aggies, withdrew from the tournament midway through his round due to injury.
The tournament concludes on Saturday. The Aggies will play with Pepperdine and Northwestern and start at 7:30 a.m.
