TOWSON, Md. - Senior attacker Elizabeth Landry performed a hat trick while senior goalkeeper Kai Murphy tallied eight saves, but UC Davis could not regain the lead after a second-half comeback, falling by a 10-7 final to Towson in collegiate women's lacrosse action at Johnny Unitas Stadium Wednesday evening.
The Aggies slip to 1-6 for the year. The Tigers improve to 4-3.
Landry led four UC Davis scorers while picking up five ground balls and two ground balls. Wednesday's game represented her fifth hat trick of the year, and the 26th for her career. Sophomore Melissa Kellan added 2-for-3 shooting while senior defender Sara Quero made her return to action with a pair of steals and three ground-ball pickups.
Sophomore attacker Gabby Cha scored a game-high four goals for Towson, the three-time defending champion of the Colonial Athletic Association.
Junior Courtney Neff put UC Davis on the board within the first minute of the contest after Landry won the initial draw. The Tigers equalized soon after, capitalizing on an Aggie turnover. However, Murphy kept UC Davis afloat with saves on the next three TU shots until Emily Gillingham and Breanna Hamm scored in the 23rd and 25 minutes to extend the lead to 3-1.
Senior attacker Sarah Maloof added a second-chance goal with 1:49 left in the half to bring the Towson lead to three before Kellan's power-play goal cut the margin to 4-2 in the final seconds before the break. Landry won the first draw of the second half and scored seconds later to trim the deficit to one then junior Ellie Delich equalized in the 36th minute.
The Tigers reclaimed a two-goal lead, thanks to goals from senior Paige Duncan and Cha within a 40-second span. Again, UC Davis countered with goals from Landry and Kellan, tying the contest for a third time, with Murphy collecting two more saves in defense of the Aggie cage.
Cha scored three of the next four goals in the game, with only Landry interrupting the Towson outburst, pulling the Tigers to a 10-7 advantage with 6:31 remaining in regulation. UC Davis had two possessions down the stretch and managed to put shots on frame, but Towson goalie Kelsea Donnelly was there for her seventh and eighth saves.
The Tigers outshots their guests by a 26-18 margin and won 13 of the 19 total draws in the contest.
UC Davis completes its Spring Break trip to the Old Line State with a 3 p.m. (PDT) contest at Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
