DAVIS, Calif. -
Senior attacker
Elizabeth Landry tied her career high of seven goals but her team's second-half comeback run fell short as UC Davis lost a 13-10 non-conference women's lacrosse battle with Bryant at Aggie Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies slip to 1-5 for the year, ending a four-game homestand. The Bulldogs improve to 5-2 overall.
Landry also finished with an assist, two draw controls, four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Her seven goals matches the total scored against Saint Mary's in last year's season finale. Senior Troy Cragen, junior Sam Axenroth and freshman Shannon Geary each netted their first goals of the year. Sophomore Melissa Kellan added two assists.
Sophomore attacker Emily Columbus tallied six goals and two assists to lead Bryant, while junior Nicole Britton chipped in a 4-2-6 attacking chart. In fact, Columbus and Landry combined for all 11 goals from halftime to the 54th minute -- Columbus with five, Landry with six.
The Bulldogs opened with a flurry of offense, taking a 4-0 lead in the first 3:39 before UC Davis even managed an offensive set. Aggie junior midfielder Mary Doyle won two of her four total draw controls to allow the Aggies to cut into the deficit. Landry put UC Davis on the board with a second-chance goal in the sixth minute, then freshman Kelsey DeJesus assisted Geary in transition in the 10th to cut the lead to 4-2.
Those two goals began a 7-2 comeback, trimming the 4-0 hole to a 6-4 deficit at halftime, then giving the Aggies a 7-6 lead on Landry's eight-meter chance with 24:00 left in the second. Columbus equalized two minutes later after UC Davis goalie Kai Murphy deflected an initial shot by Lauren Dezcalso, but a Morgan Sissler draw control set the table for another go-ahead: this time with Kellan feeding Landry to make it 8-7 in the 40th minute.
This proved to be the Aggies' last lead of the contest, as Columbus scored in the 43rd, 47th, 51st and 52nd minutes to set the Bulldogs to an 11-9 advantage.
Landry's final goal of the game later brought the margin back to just 11-10 in Bryant's favor with 6:59 remaining. Senior defender Allie Lehner won the next draw, and a second Axenroth goal appeared to tie the game at 11-all with 5:25 left. However, the stick inspection removed the goal from the board, taking away what would have been the first career multi-goal game for the Doylestown, Pennsylvania product. The Bulldogs were awarded the ball at midfield, and Britton scored shortly thereafter to bump the deficit back to two.
For her part, the co-captain Lehner finished the day with two draw controls, two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Doyle had three ground balls to go with her four DCs. Overall, the Aggie midfield completed 7 of 8 transitions for the team's best clear percentage of the year.
UC Davis breaks for the university's final examinations before returning to action in Spring Break games at Towson (March 25) and Johns Hopkins (March 28), the latter of which is ranked 20th in this week's national coaches' poll.
