BANDON, Ore. - UC Davis senior Mike Brockington posted three birdies on his final five holes and finished with a 1-over 73 on Saturday during the second round of the Bandon Dunes Championship, while the first-day leader Aggies slipped into a tie for sixth but remain in contention with one round to play.
Players had to fight inclement weather throughout Saturday's round which had a 3.5-hour rain delay. The Aggies shot 13-over 301 and are 6 over through 36 holes. They held a two-shot lead after Thursday's opening day and are now tied with San Jose State.
The teams are chasing Duke and Missouri which share the lead at 1 under. Saint Mary's is third at 1 over while Washington State and No. 36 Colorado are tied for fourth at 3 over. No teams broke par in the second round and with high winds and showers expected in the area on Sunday, the leaderboard may get jumbled up again.
Brockington is tied for 11th at 1 under to lead UC Davis which also has Patrick Soli tied for 13th after his round of 76 tied him for 13th overall at par. Luke Vivolo, who's tied for 27th at 3 over, and Matt Seramin, who's tied for 33rd at 4 over, also shot 76s on Saturday. Ryan Han had a 79 and is tied for 59th at 8 over.
San Jose State's Cody Bick is 6 under and holds the individual lead.
Brockington paced the Aggies on Saturday, going 3 over after 11 holes before finding his first birdie on the par3 14th. That started a run that also saw him birdie the par-4 16th and 17th holes to help him gain back two shots. Soli, who fired a 68 on Friday, had a rough front nine. He was 7 over at the turn but then turned it on the rest of the way with three birdies and six pars.
Vivolo also played the back nine of the Bandon Dunes Course well, covering the nine holes just one shot over par. Seramin was 2 over on both the front nine and back nine while Han bucked the trend of his teammates and was just 2 over on the front.
The teams will fight Mother Nature on Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. UC Davis is paired with Saint Mary's, Missouri and Duke.
