DAVIS, Calif. -- Jasmine Ware scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds , helping key a late 11-3 run for UC Santa Barbara with just over five minutes to play, helping lift the Gauchos to a 57-52 victory over UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at The Pavilion.
Senior Sydnee Fipps finished with a team-high 13 points to go with five rebounds and three assists for the Aggies, who fell to 13-13 overall and 8-6 in Big West Conference play, losing their third straight following five straight wins.
UCSB won its second game of the year, improving to 2-25 overall and 2-12 in conference play.
Fipps was joined in double figures by classmate Kelsey Harris, who had 12 points on a quartet of three-pointers to go with seven rebounds, while junior Alyson Doherty added 12 points and six rebounds. Junior Celia Marfone finished with a game-high eight rebounds.
Held to their lowest single-half point total following a 21-17 deficit at the break, UC Davis bounced back to shoot just under 45 percent from the floor in the second period to help power its rally. A three-pointer by Harris and a slash to the hoop by freshman Rachel Nagel erased a five-point deficit and tied the game at 27-all just five and a half minutes into the second half.
Following a three-pointer by the Gauchos' Kristine Brance, a reverse lay-up by Fipps kept the Aggies within a point, but a 10-3 burst by UCSB rebuild the Gauchos' lead back to eight at 40-32 with just over nine minutes to play. Back-to-back baskets inside by Doherty, and another three from Harris, pulled the Aggies back to within a point at 40-39 with 7:18 to play, but the Aggies could not get over the hump.
Doherty hit two free throws a minute later made it 42-41 in favor of UC Santa Barbara before the Gauchos went on their decisive run. Ware scored inside to start an 8-0 run and, following an "and one" by Fipps, UCSB hit 7-of-8 from the line to offset a pair of three's from Nagel and Dani Nafekh en route to the win.
The Gauchos shot just over 37 percent from the field to the Aggies' 35 percent, while UC Davis held the advantage on the glass, 38-36.
The battle for seeding in the Big West Tournament continues with the final week of the regular season, as the Aggies return to Southern California for meetings with UC Riverside (March 5) and UC Irvine (March 7).
