CHICO, Calif. - Tori Edwards scored 4,621 points in the heptathlon to move into fourth-place on UC Davis' career leaders list in the event,
Murphy Nicholson moved up two spots to No. 8, and
Shane Ryan and
Hawk Hammer each won events to highlight the Aggies' decathlon efforts during the final day of the 30th annual Chico Multi Classic on Friday at Chico State.
The two-day meet was the season-opener for the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams which will be in full action next weekend in Berkeley. Edwards finished third in the heptathlon, Nicholson tallied 4,112 points to place eighth and Julia Haselhuhn had 3,666 and took 11th. All three moved up a spot from their first-day positions.
Freshman
Drake Foote, who scored 6,143 points in the decathlon after finishing second in the javelin, led the Aggie men with his sixth-place performance. Ryan was seventh with 6,116 points and Hawk scored 5,607 points and was ninth.
The leaders in both events after Thursday's opening action held their leads to win titles. Kate Earle of Humboldt State had 4,958 points to take the heptathlon while Chico State's Phil Bailey had 6,915 points in the decathlon.
Both the UC Davis men and women had several highlights on Friday. Edwards, who had not competed in the heptathlon since 2013, posted a big PR to move from ninth place on the Aggies' all-time list with 4,052 points, all the way to the No. 4 spot. She capped her meet by finishing second in the 800-meter run in 2:22.09 for 795 points. Her previous-best score had come at the Big West Championships.
Nicholson entered the season with a career-best score of 4,077 points, which she earned at last year's conference championships, but she went past that with 4,112 points at Chico. She also enjoyed a strong 800, crossing in 2:29.27 to score 702 points. Haselhuhn was making her Aggie debut and was sixth in the javelin for her highest placing.
Ryan and Hammer each posted event wins to spark their day in the decathlon. Ryan won the 1,500 by nearly six seconds in 4:40.99 to pick up 674 points while also adding a fourth-place showing in the discus earlier in the day for another high finish. Hammer led a 1-2 UC Davis showing in the javelin, earning top honors at 53.77 meters for 645 points while Foote earned 619 after taking second at 52.04 meters. Hammer was also second in the pole vault.
The Aggie multi-event specialists will join their teammates for the Cal Opener on Mar. 7.
