EASTON, Pa. -
Sophomore
Melissa Kellan scored a game-high five goals while senior
Elizabeth Landry added a hat trick and eight draw controls, but UC Davis could not close the gap of a two-goal halftime deficit in falling by a 14-12 final to Lafayette in collegiate women's lacrosse action on Rappolt Field at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex Sunday.
The Aggies move to 0-2 for the year.
Kellan's five goals represent her highest total since netting seven almost exactly one year ago at Old Dominion. Landry collected two assists to go with her scoring and draw output. Junior Courtney Neff added two goals, while junior Mary Doyle and freshman Hannah Friel each chipped in one. Senior goalie Kai Murphy posted three saves in her 42 minutes in the cage while redshirt freshman Lauren Ali her collegiate debut with four stops in the remaining 18.
Sophomores Kirsten Wilhemsen and Amanda Case led the Leopards with four goals apiece.
UC Davis stormed to a 2-0 start in the first three minutes of play, first on Doyle's eight-meter attempt in the opening minute, then on Neff's score after senior Allie Lehner forced a turnover in the Aggie backfield. Landry later assisted Kellan in the 11th minute to keep UC Davis ahead by a 3-1 margin, before Wilhelmsen and Charlotte Rath each scored two goals in a 4-0 Lafayette comeback run.
Kellan and Landry each scored with 10:12 and 9:00 remaining in the first half, respectively, tying the contest at 5-5. Wilhelmsen reclaimed the lead with her third goal two minutes later. The Leopards held a 7-5 edge at the break.
Landry won the initial draw of the second half, setting up Friel's first career goal as an Aggie just seconds later. She then scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute, and won the following draw to give UC Davis a chance to regain the lead. However, Lafayette freshman Anna Raymond made one of her six total saves on that drive. Ali followed suit on the opposite end, stopping Case's eight-meter attempt in the 36th minute.
Nonetheless, Case scored two goals in a 4-0 run during the next 12 minutes of play, setting her Leopards to a 12-8 advantage. Kellan and Neff each brought UC Davis to within two but Lafayette prevented its guests from cutting the deficit to fewer than that margin the rest of the way.
Lafayette held slight edges in shots (25-22) and draw controls (15-13) for the day.
UC Davis begins a four-game homestand on March 2 in a rare Monday night contest against Detroit. First draw is 7 p.m. at Aggie Stadium.
