HONOLULU -- In a see-saw battle that came down the final possession of the game, a last-second game-tying teardrop from the left block wouldn't fall for visiting UC Davis, as Hawai'i won its 11th consecutive game, escaping with a 62-60 win in front of a season-high 2,859 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
The Aggies had their five-game winning streak snapped, falling to 13-11 overall and 8-4 in Big West Conference play. Senior Sydnee Fipps finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line to lead UC Davis, setting a new school record with her 32nd career 20-point game.
The Rainbow Wahine improved to 19-7 overall and 11-2 in conference play to remain in first place in the league standings, taking 27 more field goal attempts and shooting just 34 percent from the floor. Shawna-Lei Kuehu finished with a team-high 12 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists, including two free throws with 29.9 seconds remaining proving to be the difference.
Ashleigh Karaitiana's three-pointer from the right corner turned a one-point game into a four-point Rainbow Wahine lead with just over a minute to play, and Kuehu's two free throws with 30 seconds to go put the home team up five. The Aggies didn't shy away however, driving back down the court and getting the ball inside to Alyson Doherty, who powered up on the right side, sinking the basket and drawing the foul. Her free throw was good, bringing UC Davis to within a pair, 62-60.
Forced to foul, the Aggies sent Briana Harris to the line for two, but the sophomore missed both, giving UC Davis one last chance. After an Aggies' timeout, Fipps got the ball at the top of the key and drove left, but her fall-away shot at the buzzer came up short as the buzzer sounded.
UC Davis shot just under 48 percent from the field, but attempted just 10 three-pointers for the game, just two days after a record-setting 17 three's made on Thursday against Long Beach State.
Doherty finished with 14 points and four rebounds, while junior Celia Marfone led the Aggies with seven rebounds.
The Aggies came out firing in a big way to start the game, opening the contest on a 12-0 run and leading by the same amount at 14-2 just five minutes in as the defense kept the Rainbow Wahine cold, limiting Hawaii to just 1-of-9 from the floor to start.
However, the Rainbow Wahine absorbed the punch and answered back with a lengthy run of their own, exploding for an 11-0 burst over a three minute span to make it a one-point game, 16-15, with 8:47 to play. Celia Marfone's "and one" started a string that saw the Aggies score seven of the next eight points to go back up seven, 23-16, with 5:46 to play.
With Fipps and Doherty on the bench due to foul trouble after playing just eight and six minutes apiece, respectively, in the opening period, Hawai'i took advantage for another offensive burst -- this time an 11-2 run capped by a basket inside by Megan Huff -- that gave the Rainbow Wahine their first lead of the game at 27-25 with just over a minute to play.
Freshman Pele Gianotti tied it with two free throws and Destiny King's long jumper from inside the left elbow with 41 seconds remaining sent the home team to the locker room with a two-point lead at the break.
UC Davis returns to The Pavilion for its final homestand of the season, welcoming Cal Poly (Feb. 26) and UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 28) to Northern California.
