Final Stats

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

Senior goalkeeper Kai Murphy tallied 12 saves, including four against eight-meter attempts, but UC Davis was outshot by a 30-10 margin in its 7-2 season-opening loss at Lehigh in collegiate women's lacrosse action at a frozen Ulrich Sports Complex Friday afternoon.

The Aggies begin the 2015 season at 0-1. The Mountain Hawks even at 1-1.

Sophomore attacker Melissa Kellan and junior attacker Mary Doyle accounted for the two UC Davis goals, scoring on free-position opportunities in the second half. Doyle, senior Sara Quero and senior Allie Lehner each posted a pair of caused turnovers on defense.

UC Davis struggled to clear the ball early in the game, committing eight turnovers and failing on five transitions during the first 25 minutes, during which Lehigh sprung to a 3-0 lead. Murphy posted seven saves in that span to keep the Mountain Hawks in relative check, but the Aggies could only manage one shot in their attacking third for most of the first half.

Lehigh senior Carli Sukonik then made it 4-0 with her side-armed sling into the cage in the 28th minute. Quero managed a good look at the LU net in the final minute but goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt was there for the stick save. Lehigh went to the break with a 4-0 edge.

Kellan put UC Davis on the board in the 37th minute with her eight-meter chance, bringing the score to 5-1. Five minutes later, Doyle made it 5-2 with her free-position opportunity, shortly after Murphy registered her 10th save on a similar spot on the opposite end. However, the transition game continued to shape the outcome: Lehigh was a perfect 16-for-16 in clear attempts while UC Davis managed just 10-for-18, part of a total of 17 turnovers.

Sukonik, a three-time All-Patriot League honoree, led all scorers with four goals and an assist for the day.

According to AccuWeather.com, Friday's gametime temperature in the Lehigh Valley was 13 degrees Farenheit, with a "RealFeel" needle in the low single digits -- a stark contrast from the mid-60s in Davis.

UC Davis completes its opening weekend with a game at Lafayette on Sunday. First draw is 9 a.m. Pacific.
