HOUSTON, Texas -- Three Aggies made the championship finals in their respective events and the UC Davis "A" relay of Mia Facey, Brittany Rojo, Courtney Schultz, and Kirsten Brand, took home the title in the 200 free relay to kick-off the night, helping their team to third place after day one at the 2015 Phill Hansel Invitational hosted by the University of Houston on Thursday.
The Aggies finished the first day of competition with 258 points, trailing only Rice (310) and Tulane (264.50) in the team standings following the first five events, and lead the fourth-place and host Cougars by 15 points.
UC Davis' quartet of Facey, Rojo, Schultz, and Brand, opened the day strong for the Aggies, winning the 200 free relay with a finals time of 1:33.18 -- almost two seconds better than the previous season best set at Utah on Nov. 6, and just one second off the school record (1:32.02) set in 2013. Three of the top four times in that event this season for UC Davis were set in the finals on Thursday.
Senior Lexy Troup then added to the point haul for the Aggies, finishing second in the "B" final of the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:54.58, which was four seconds faster than her prelim time of 4:58.57 which, in turn, was 14 seconds better than the team's previous season best of 5:12.16 held by Troup and set against LMU on Halloween.
Brand (4:59.98) joined Troup as Aggies who have now broken the five-minute barrier in the event, finishing 13th in the prelims, but not swimming in the final. Meanwhile Cara Silvas (5:01.74) and Angelica Nowack (5:05.95) combined to help UC Davis set the team's top seven times in the event on Thursday alone.
After swimming the lead-off leg in the winning 200 free relay, Facey became the first Aggie individual to make a championship final, eventually finishing sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.83, competing in the event for the first time this season and briefly ranking among the top-10 times in the event in school history. That was until fellow freshman Solie Laughlin won the "B" Final with a time of 2:03.76 -- the sixth-best time in school history and shaving nearly three seconds off her prelim time. Classmate Eva Chung was close behind in 11th overall with a time of 2:04.57 -- the seventh-fastest time in school history and the second-fastest time this season, trailing only Laughlin's swim.
Brand and Schultz then turned up the heat in the 50 free, blazing across the pool to finish second and third, respectively, in the championship final. Brand set a season best with a time of 23.14 -- narrowly missing out on an NCAA "B" cut by just .15 in the finals and ranking as the fifth-fastest time in the event in school history -- while Schultz also set a personal season best with a time of 23.29, cutting nearly four-tenths off her prelim time (23.67) and matching teammate Hilvy Cheung for the sixth-fastest time in school history.
The Aggies closed out the day with an eighth-place finish in the 400 medley relay as the quartet of Laughlin, Ferko, Rojo, and Brand, touched in a season-best time of 3:48.05.
Action at the Phill Hansel Invitational continues on Friday (Nov. 20) with seven events scheduled: 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 800 free relay. Preliminary swims begin at 8 a.m. PT, with the finals to follow later in the day at 4 p.m. PT.
