Mewes' two goals lifts UC Davis to victory

DAVIS, Calif. - UMass Lowell scored the first and last goals of the afternoon during Friday's match at Aggie Field Hockey Facility, but two goals from Lauren Mewes and another from Agustina Singh helped UC Davis secure a 3-2, come-from-behind victory, and avenge its overtime loss suffered last year on the River Hawks' home turf.

Mewes, a freshman midfielder, is the first Aggie to score two goals in a game since Kayla Wigney accomplished the feat on Sept. 21, 2014, at Central Michigan.

Field hockey will not return to action until Oct. 18 when the Aggies head south to Stockton for their regular-season return match against the Tigers, and will enter that contest with a 7-9 overall record. With the loss, UMass Lowell falls to 5-7.

Mewes is also the sixth player to score a game-winning goal this season, tying an all-time program high originally set by the 2012 team.

"This was our best team effort of the season," said UC Davis head coach Tiffany Huisman. "Whether we were on offense or defense, our passing was crisp, our communication was on-point and we were able to force (UMass Lowell) to commit turnovers."

UC Davis recorded more than three times as many shots than its opponent (20-6), four times as many shots on goal (8-2) and recorded five of its six penalty corners in the second half. After entering halftime trailing 1-0, the Aggies also erased their one-goal deficit when Mewes scored her first career goal less than two minutes after play resumed in the second half.

The score remained tied until UC Davis took the lead for good when Mewes struck again in the 48th minute.

On her first goal, she quickly redirected a rebound into the back of the cage after Singh was stopped by UML goalkeeper Kelsey Federico on back-to-back attempts from point-blank range. After the second of Singh's shots was deflected back into play, Mewes scooped up the free ball and pushed it inside the far post.

An Aggie penalty corner set up Mewes' second goal; after receiving a pass from stopper Hannah Drawbridge, Jamie Garcia set herself up as if she was planning to take a shot on cage, but slapped a pass to her teammate instead. With many River Hawks caught off-guard, Mewes ended the play by beating Federico, once again, far post.

"I am thrilled with the way Lauren played today. She was aggressive, smart with her positioning in front of goal and took advantage of scoring opportunities that came her way," said Huisman.

The last of three unanswered UC Davis goals was recorded on a counterattack, during a moment of the match when the Aggies were up a player due to a River Hawk yellow card.

Once Kayla Wigney entered the scoring arc on a fast-break opportunity, she fired a shot towards goal -- one that was tipped-in by Singh to give the Aggies a two-goal cushion.

Singh ended Friday's contest with a match-high six shots, the same total as UMass Lowell's entire team, and three shots on goal -- another match high that topped the two recorded by the River Hawks.
