SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Senior Kelsey Harris finished with a game-high 19 points, including a key three-pointer to break open a two-point game in overtime, and visiting UC Davis outscored UC Santa Barbara 12-6 in the extra period to rally the Aggies to a 60-54 win over the Gauchos on Saturday afternoon at The Thunderdome.
Junior Alyson Doherty added 15 points and nine rebounds for UC Davis (9-10, 4-3), which came all the way back from down 10 points in the second half for the victory. UC Santa Barbara (0-20, 0-7) remained winless on the year, led by 14 points from Onome Jemerigbe, who drained a game-tying three-pointer with 3.8 seconds left in regulation to force the extra period.
Two free throws by Jemerigbe had the Gauchos up nine at 45-36 with just over four minutes to play in regulation before the Aggies made their charge. Harris nailed a pair of three's and Doherty scored inside to make it a one-point game, setting up Celia Marfone, who slashed to the basket to give UC Davis its first lead since 6-5 with just over four minutes gone in the game.
Doherty hit two from the line to make it a 12-0 run and give UC Davis a 48-45 lead with 24 seconds to play, but UC Santa Barbara had one last kick. The Aggies' defense pushed back the Gaucho shooters until Jemerigbe got the ball at the left elbow, but 30 feet away with time running down. The sophomore, however, hoisted up a shot anyway and found the bottom of the net with just seconds remaining to tie it and send it to overtime.
In the extra period, free throws by Doherty and Nafekh, and a basket inside by Doherty off a feed from Harris, gave UC Davis a five-point lead in the extra period, but UCSB answered every Aggies attempt to pull away. A three-point play by Jemerigbe brought the Gauchos back to within two and, following another three by Harris, Makala Roper matched her with a three from the right corner, to climb back to within 54-56 with 1:46 to play.
Two huge steals by Dani Nafekh down the stretch turned back a rally, and Nafekh and Harris each nailed a pair of free throws in the final 40 seconds to ice the game.
UC Davis shot 48 percent from the floor for the game, while holding UCSB to just 33 percent shooting -- including 2-of-7 in the extra period. The Aggies out-rebounded the Gauchos, 36-27, and overcame 25 turnovers that led to 24 UCSB points.
Following its brief trip down the coast, UC Davis returns home next weekend to host CSUN on Thursday (Feb. 5) and UC Irvine on Saturday (Feb. 7). Tip-off from The Pavilion is scheduled for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
