Hawkins named one of the nation's top players again

Jan. 22, 2015

BOSTON - Presented annually to the most outstanding mid-major player in college basketball, the mid-season watch list for this year's Lou Henson Award includes senior guard Corey Hawkins.

Among all Division I players, Hawkins is ranked No. 2 with his .500 three-point field goal percentage and No. 8 in scoring averaging 20.9 points per game. Both figures are also league-high figures entering Thursday's game at Hawai'i.

Just a handful of days after grabbing the nation's attention after scoring 28 points and collecting 10 rebounds in the Aggies' Jan. 10, ESPNU home game against Long Beach State, Hawkins was named one of the nation's best college basketball players by ESPN. The senior guard was ranked No. 25 college basketball pundit John Gasaway's annual hype-free, performance-based listing of the top 25 players in the country.

Within the Big West Conference, Hawkins possesses top five three-point field goals per game (No. 2, 2.94), assists (No. 5, 3.69 per game) and field goal percentage (No. 5, .512) marks.

Currently in his third season at UC Davis, no Division I player has a higher career scoring total than Hawkins and his 1,443 points; he needs just 81 more points to join Preston Neumayr (1979-83, 1,578 pts.) and Audwin Thomas (1975-79, 1,821 pts.) as the top three scorers in the 104-year history of the program.

The award is named in honor of Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

The Mid-Major level is comprised from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast and Western Athletic.

The 2015 recipient will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet on April 3 in Indianapolis, site of the 2015 men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
