DAVIS, Calif. - Alyson Doherty's fifth double-double of the season, sparked by her game-high 18 points, was not enough on Thursday night as Hawai'i used a late run to take the lead for good en route to a 58-53 Big West women's basketball victory over UC Davis at The Pavilion.
"Hawai'i is a really good basketball team and it was a great game all-around," Head Coach Jennifer Gross said. "For us, I think it came down to two things: we gave up too many offensive boards and we turned the ball over too much. We played extremely hard, we just didn't do those two things well enough to win."
The Aggies saw their modest two-game winning streak come to an end while losing for the first time on Hamilton Court in their last four outings. UC Davis is 8-9 overall and 3-2 in the Big West.
Destiny King scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Rainbow Wahine, while Ashleigh Karaitiana added 13. Megan Huff came off the bench to pull down a career-high 13 rebounds. Hawai'i is 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the Big West.
Senior Sydnee Fipps scored 10 points for UC Davis before fouling out with five minutes to go while Marfone had 10 boards. Doherty's 11 rebounds completed her double-double, which was also the eighth in her career, while adding three blocks in a game for the fourth time this season.
The Aggies led 26-23 at halftime after a back-and-forth first half that saw eight lead changes in the first eight minutes, and extended the advantage to 35-25 after Doherty's three-point play 2-1/2 minutes into the second half, capping a 9-2 burst to start the period.
"That's our challenge," Gross said. "We play so well for stretches the attention to every detail in that situation has to be so great. In that stretch, I think, we turned the ball over three straight times and, up to that point, we were making every shot challenging for them."
Huff's layup with 13:10 to go tied the game to cap a 10-0 Hawai'i run, six of those points coming from King. That preceded six ties - there were 12 in the game overall - with the last one coming 48-48 with 5:43 left thanks to a personal 5-0 run by Heidi Johnson to bring the Aggies level.
But the Rainbow Wahine strung together a key 8-0 run -- with a three-pointer by Karaitiana dealing the big blow -- to go up 56-48 with 3:28 on the clock. Down eight, two free throws from Doherty, a slash to the basket by freshman Rachel Nagel, and a free throw from Marfone with just over a minute to play brought UC Davis to within three, but that was as close as the Aggies would get down the stretch.
Hawai'i held a slim 39-37 rebounding advantage, but was dominant on the offensive boards (16-7) which helped lead to 18 second-chance points.
Marfone's double-digit rebounds were her fifth in the last six games. UC Davis, which ranked second in the Big West in assists per game, had 20 baskets but a season-low six assists.
UC Davis returns to action next week with a two-game trip to the Central Coast, traveling to Cal Poly on Thursday and UC Santa Barbara for a Saturday matinee.
