BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Stephie Sabraw scored her second goal in as many days to chop a two-goal Indiana lead in half during Sunday's non-conference game at the IU Field Hockey Complex in Bloomington, Indiana. The Aggies remained within striking distance until the Hoosiers scored three goals within a nine-minute timespan in the second half to defeat UC Davis, 5-1.
The Aggies will enter Thursday's neutral-site match against Iowa with a 1-3 record; Indiana improves its season mark to 4-0.
Even though the Aggies outshot the Hoosiers 11-6 in the first half, the host team scored early goals in the third and seventh minute to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Midway through the half, the Aggies were rewarded for their persistence when Hannah Drawbridge connected with Sabraw to decrease the Aggies' deficit to a solitary goal.
The goal was Sabraw's second of the season and was earned less than 24 hours after the junior forward collected her first-ever game winning goal in her team's blowout victory at Saint Louis.
As a sophomore last season, Drawbridge finished her year with three assists; the junior midfielder matched that total by earning assists in half of the goals scored by the Aggies in St. Louis, and the only one earned against the Hoosiers.
UC Davis' goal capped a five-minute block of activity that took place in front of Indiana's cage. What commenced with a shot from Kristin Rodgers, one of three taken throughout the afternoon, continued with two Aggie corners, additional shots from Linnea Whitney, Agustina Singh and Jamie Garcia before Sabraw connected in the 27th minute.
In all, nine Aggies took their swings against Indiana `keepers Maggie Olson and Katie Johnson. Even though the pair recorded a collective 13 saves compared to UC Davis goalkeeper Beth Lee who finished with two, the Hoosiers' duo was tested on a continual basis from start to finish.
By taking another 11 in the second half, UC Davis outshot Indiana 22-13, posted twice as many shots on goals (14-7) and drew more than twice as many penalty corners (7-3) in Sunday's game.
Of those seven cormers, five were earned throughout the second half. By comparison, Indiana only took three corners throughout the entire contest.
Garcia led all players with six shots and nearly matched her opponent's shots on goal total with her individual effort. All six swings from Garcia required a save from either Johnson or Olson.
"This was a tough loss, but I am proud of how the girls played today and how they are responding to in-game adjustments," said Aggie head coach Tiffany Huisman.
The first of two season-long four-match road swings will conclude Thursday afternoon against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Action from Stanford's Varsity Turf will begin at 1 p.m.
