COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second time in as many weekends, more than 90 minutes were needed to determine a victor in a women's soccer match involving UC Davis. Unlike last weekend when the Aggies topped Quinnipiac, it was tournament host Air Force that brought Sunday's match to an abrupt end by scoring the game-winning goal 5:05 into overtime to hand UC Davis a 1-0 loss in the final match of the 2014 Falcon Invitational.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, Southeast Missouri faced Northern Colorado in Sunday's other tournament match, Air Force released its all-tournament team. Four UC Davis players snagged spots, a list that includes Taylor Jern, Ana Marija Sola, Kayla Collins and Sydney Burger.
Sunday's result at Cadet Field evens the Aggies' overall record to 3-3. Air Force ends its weekend with a 1-3 record.
"Our second-half scoring chances were dangerous; usually when you create that many opportunities, you win the game," said UC Davis head coach Twila Kaufman.
"However, a mark of a really good team is one that finds ways not to lose when the ball does not bounce you way on any given day."
Of the four shots taken by the Aggies throughout the second half, saves were recorded on three occasions.
Each team recorded eight shots throughout regulation and recorded another in overtime.
Lexi Poppoff was responsible for nearly half of her team's total as the senior forward led all players with four shots and three shots on goal.
Of the two shots fired by Collins at Air Force's goal, one required a save from the Falcons' goalkeeper. Taylor Locke, Rachel Smith and Sola each recorded one shot with Sola responsible for her team's other attempt on goal.
UC Davis also earned more that twice as many corner kicks; compared to the five earned by the Aggies, Air Force was only able to muster two opportunities.
Responsible for the only corner recorded in overtime, UC Davis' lone kick also doubled as the team's only scoring chance of the extra session. Once the ball was kicked into play, a header from Smith traveled just high of its intended target and landed out-of-bounds.
Once Air Force's Kaylee Shalongo received the ball from her teammate on the Falcons' following possession, she dribbled the ball through the Aggies' third of the field before ending the game with a shot that flew past the left post into the back of the net.
Starting with Friday's matchup against San Francisco, five of women's soccer's next seven games will take place at Aggie Soccer Field. Two days after the Aggies host the Dons, Utah will swing through Davis to complete a brief homestand. UC Davis will remain local for road games at Nevada and Santa Clara the following week before the Aggies open a season-long three-game homestand on Sept. 27.
Added Kaufman, "We will regroup, prepare and be ready to defend our home field."
