DAVIS, Calif. - Central Michigan and UC Davis each scored three goals throughout the second half of Sunday's non-conference match at Aggie Field Hockey Facility, but it was the Aggies two first-half goals that served as the final margin of victory in a 5-3, UC Davis triumph.
The win bumps the Aggies' record to 2-5; Central Michigan is now 1-8 this season.
"It is great to see everyone work hard for the win," said head coach Tiffany Huisman following the match. "This is part of the process; we will take what we learned from today, move forward and continue to improve."
Fighting for space in front of the Chippewas' goal among a slew of other players, Sophia Lisaius was on the receiving end of Courtney Hessler's pass - one that led to the Aggies' first goal.
With a number of players from both teams fighting for position, Hessler's set-up split Lisaius and CMU goalkeeper Sadie Reynolds; being the first player to swing her stick at the incoming pass enabled Lisaius to notch her first goal of the season in the 18th minute.
Taking place with 5:30 left until halftime, the Aggies doubled their lead on another tip-in scoring opportunity. This time, it was Mattie Maloney who earned the assist on the first of two goals recorded by Kayla Wigney.
On its first two second-half shots, Central Michigan was able to find the back of the cage. Sandwiched between goals scored by the Chippewas was a one earned by UC Davis' Kristin Rodgers - her third of the year.
All of this action took place within a five-minute timespan after the break.
Leading 3-2 with 23 minutes still remaining, Agustina Singh helped her team regain its original two-goal lead when she capitalized on a breakaway scoring opportunity and beat CMU's 'keeper far post.
Even though Singh's shot was the one that doubled her team's lead, it was Martha Duterte's hustle that enabled the Aggies to not only maintain their lead, but also double it on the team's next possession.
After causing a UC Davis turnover on its half of the turf, CMU quickly organized a counterattack and raced towards the Aggies' cage. Joining the play from the near side of the field, Duterte poked her stick towards the ball and singlehandedly disrupted the Chippewas' 1v1 breakaway scoring chance.
Instead of forcing UC Davis goalkeeper Makheila MacDonald to make a play in an attempt to preserve her team's lead, Duterte's lunge forced the ball out-of-bounds. This enabled her teammates to set themselves up accordingly in front of MacDonald before the Chippewas returned the ball into play.
"Martha was definitely a rock for us back there on defense today," said Huisman.
UC Davis briefly held that two-goal advantage for 81 seconds until CMU countered with another goal to trim the Aggies' deficit to one with more than 13 minutes remaining in regulation.
UC Davis outshot Central Michigan 21-13; three of those shots were earned in rapid-fire succession late in the match.
Corralling a rebound off her own shot, Singh immediately fired the last of her game-high seven shots towards Reynolds, only to see another CMU defender deflect the ball away from the cage.
Even though Singh was denied twice, no Central Michigan player was able to stop Wigney when she pounced on the loose ball and scored her second goal of the day.
By earning two goals in as many shots, Wigney is the first Aggie to score on multiple occasions in one game since Danielle Koehne accomplished this feat in UC Davis' 2013 season opener against Missouri State.
Since the field hockey program returned to action in 2009, only five Aggies have scored multiple goals in a regular season game. That list includes Casey Wollbrink (2010), Emily Mecke (2011), Cloey LemMon (2011 and '12), Koehne (2013).
Responsible for half of her team's goals in a 4-2 victory over Radford in the 2013 NorPac Tournament, LemMon's effort is the only multi-goal game recorded by an Aggie in the playoffs since the program was resurrected.
Starting with Thursday's 1 p.m. (PT) contest at Bryant University, UC Davis will play its next three matches on the road. The Aggies will also visit UMass-Lowell (Sept. 27, 10 a.m.) and Northeastern (Sept. 28, 9 a.m.) before returning to Davis for their final three home events of the season.
