RENO, Nev. - Even though UC Davis outshot Nevada 13-11 in Friday afternoon's non-conference match from Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nev., it was the Wolf Pack who were able to record the only goal scored to hand the Aggies a 1-0 loss.
With the win, the Wolf Pack snapped a four-match losing streak against UC Davis and improved their record to 3-5-1. The Aggies now sport a 3-6 overall mark.
Even though Nevada took six shots throughout the opening half compared to the Aggies' four, both teams recorded one shot on goal.
For Nevada, its lone scoring attempt took place within the first minute of the match when UC Davis goalkeeper Taylor Jern scooped up a shot from Nevada's Daisha Jones-Oglesby.
UC Davis recorded its first shot on goal when Lexi Poppoff tested Nevada's netminder with just over two minutes remaining until halftime.
Both Jones-Oglesby and Poppoff led their team with four and three shots respectively. Including her game-winner scored in the 69th minute, the former notched both of her team's shots on goal. The latter, combined with Rachel Smith's second-half attempt, were responsible for the Aggies' matching shots on goal total.
Leading by a goal with 21:51 remaining, Nevada was fortunate to maintain its advantage and escape with a win after withstanding a vicious Aggie attack from that point in time, to the final horn.
Of the final eight shots taken in Friday's affair, UC Davis was responsible for all but one.
Haley Hughes, one of nine Aggies who fired shots Wolf Pack netminder Devyn Bryar, was the first player who attempted to net the equalizer. On her only shot taken, her kick sailed over the crossbar.
Ten minutes later, Lindsey O'Tousa's lone shot also sailed over its intended target.
As the match progressed, the first of Mandy McKeegan's back-to-back shots missed its mark; the second deflected off a Nevada player. Moments later, McKeegan also took the Aggies' only corner kick - an opportunity that was eventually cleared by the Wolf Pack.
Able to keep the action in front of Nevada's goal throughout the final minutes of regulation, two shots from Smith and another from Andrea Damian nearly forced an additional 10 minutes of action.
