BANDON, Ore. - Two birdies and just one bogey spelled a 1-under 70 and a tie for eighth place for senior Matt Hansen on Sunday as the UC Davis men's golf team ended the first round of the Bandon Dunes Championship, hosted by Gonzaga, in a tie for seventh place.
The Aggies shot a 4-over 292 team score on the Pacific Dunes layout at Bandon Dunes Golf Course and are tied with Rice. Missouri (281) and Utah Valley (282) are in the top two spots but the next four teams are six shots or less in front of UC Davis.
Hansen's 70 was the only score in the red for the Aggies who also picked up a 73 from Luke Vivolo, a 74 from Ben Corfee and a 75 by Jonny Baxter. Joshua Granger opened with an 82. Vivolo is tied for 27th in the 84-player field.
Hansen had just one hiccup in his otherwise stellar round. His birdie on the par-4 sixth hole put him 1 under while his birdie on the par-4 13th did the same. He mixed in 15 pars and played the back nine 1 under.
Hansen, ranked 51st by Golfstat, is one of only 10 players under par and trails the leaders - Emilio Cuartero of Missouri, Peter Gullickson of Gonzaga, and Utah Valley's J.T. Timmons - by just three shots after the trio each carded 67s.
Vivolo scrambled to a 3 over after just six holes but then righted himself with a birdie on the par-3 10th. He followed that with 11 consecutive pars to end his round.
Corfee had one birdie in his round and played his opening nine holes at par. Three bogeys on the back put him 3 over for the day. He's tied for 40th. Baxter had two birdies, both on par-5 holes, and played the course's front nine even. Two double-bogeys were part of a 4-over back nine. He's tied for 46th.
Early struggles put Granger several shots above par but three birdies in a four-hole span helped turn the tide. He played his final 11 holes even.
The teams will play a shotgun round on Monday beginning at 8:30 a.m. UC Davis will start on the back nine and play with No. 16 Washington, Saint Mary's and Utah Valley.
