SAN MARCOS, Texas - UC Davis' sprinters got off to a fast start at the Bobcat Invitational on Friday afternoon with the women picking up a trio of top-three finishes and Karl Moran posting a fourth-place showing for the men.
The UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams sent eight sprinters to Texas State University for the weekend meet, squaring off against a strong field of collegiate and unattached runners.
Cekarri Nixon was second in the 400-meter dash, Ashley Marshall took third in the 100 and Kellie Grigg was third in the 400 hurdles. Moran took his fourth in the 400 hurdles as well.
Nixon, the school-record holder in the 400 was the top collegiate finisher in Friday's event which had 37 competitors. She was timed in a season-best 54.57, trailing only Kineke Alexander of Elite Performance (52.73). Leslie Reed was seventh.
Marshall (11.32 seconds) led a trio of Aggies in the 100, a group that also included Nixon, who was fifth (11.72), and Reed, who tied for 10th (12.04). Each of them blazed to times that would would've affected the program's all-time list, including Marshall who would've broke her own school record of 11.34 seconds, but the times were wind-aided, negating them for record purposes.
Griggs took third in a field of 17 hurdlers, crossing in 1:01.70. She placed only behind Skyler Willis of Akron (1:00.28) and Valerie Thames of Southern (1:00.57).
Moran beat a dozen racers during his fourth-place hurdle showing. He was timed in 53.67 with Dannie Luckey of Prairie View A&M (52.94) and Joshua Woods of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (53.67) taking the first two spots.
Kaio Sena and Sava Boyadjiev were 10th and 15th, respectively, the 100 on Friday for the Aggie men. Sena had a wind-aided time of 10.73 seconds while Boyadjiev went 10.81. His mark was also wind-aided.
