BANDON, Ore. - Matt Hansen's eagle on the 18th hole capped his 2-under 69 while Luke Vivolo shot a 72 as the pair finished second and third, respectively, for the runner-up UC Davis men's golf team at the Bandon Dunes Championship on Tuesday.
The Aggies, which trailed winner Missouri by 15 strokes entering the final round, roared to within two strokes of the Tigers by firing a 1-over 285. It was the lowest team score of the day by four shots and helped UC Davis beat three teams ranked in Golfstat's top 50 - No. 16 Washington, No. 48 Colorado and No. 39 Oregon.
Hansen (-2) and Vivolo (-1) were part of just three golfers who managed to tame the Pacific Dunes course at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort with scores under par. Medalist Jonathan Sanders was the other, posting a 54-hole total of 3-under 210.
Ben Corfee had a strong tournament, tying for 15th at 6 over, Jonny Baxter, who had a 71, tied for 33rd at 20 over and Joshua Granger was 78th at 28 over.
The Aggies steadily moved up the standings of the 15-team tournament, going from seventh to third at the end of the second round and then rallying to within a pair of shots of Missouri.
Hansen was 1 under on each side of the course, stringing together consecutive birdies on the ninth through 10th holes to move to 2 under. A double-bogey on the par-3 17th put him even but he ended the day on a high note with an eagle on the par-5 18th.
Hansen shot in the 60s for the ninth time this season and for the fifth consecutive tournament. He also finished under par for the fifth straight event, had his second runner-up finish and was in the top-five for the third time.
Vivolo finished in the red for the first time this season while posting his best 54-hole score (212) and highest finish of his career. He bogeyed the par-4 first hole and the par-3 11th to move to 2 over but then used two birdies the rest of the way to help him finish just 1 over.
Corfee, who shot a 73, had three birdies on Tuesday, covering the course's front nine even. Baxter had four birdies in his nice round of 71, including two on the back nine which he played 1 under. Granger shot 79, collecting two birdies including one his final hole - the par-5 3rd hole.
The Aggies will return to action on Mar. 28-30 when they travel to the Bay Area for the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford.
