CHICO, Calif. - Kira Rienecker and Murphy Nicholson went 1-2 in the meet-ending 800-meter run, en route to career-best heptathlon scores, while Hawk Hammer won two events on the second day of the decathlon, as UC Davis finished strong on Friday at the Chico State Multi-Event Classic.
Rienecker finished second in the event's top section with 4,508 points while Nicholson jumped four spots to place sixth with 4,043. Rienecker's score improved her No. 4 spot on the Aggies' all-time list, beating her previous best of 4,418 points from last year's Big West Championship. Nicholson moved into the No. 10 position, becoming the 10th UC Davis heptathlete to break the 4,000-point barrier.
Hammer was in sixth place entering the second day of the decathlon's B section but moved up three positions to finish third with 5,282 points.
Rienecker and Murphy capped their day with strong performances in the 800. Rienecker crossed in 2:20.12, scoring 822 points, while Nicholson was close behind in 2:21.30, adding 806 points to her total. The next competitor was seven seconds back of the Aggie duo.
Jacky Stoll of Fresno City College edged Rienecker for first place, scoring 4,572 points.
Hammer started the second day by finishing fourth in the 110 high hurdles for 448 points before later winning the pole vault (13 feet, 11.25 inches) for 688 points and the javelin (150-1) for 526 more.
Oregon Tech's Anthony Padilla scored 5,790 points to capture the title.
The remainder of the UC Davis track and field teams will begin their season on Mar. 8 at Cal.
