STANFORD, Calif. -- Junior center Alyson Doherty finished with 17 points and seven rebounds to go with a pair of blocked shots, while senior Sydnee Fipps added 13 more on Monday afternoon, but a late 12-4 burst by host Stanford broke open what was a four-point game, lifting the No. 16 Cardinal to a 71-59 win over the Aggies at Maples Pavilion.

The defeat dropped UC Davis to 4-7 overall on the season as the Aggies trailed by only four points at the break and stayed within single digits of their Bay Area rivals for most of the contest. Stanford improved to 7-4 overall on the year, getting a career-high 30 points from Bonnie Samuelson on 8-of-13 from the field, including six three-pointers.

"We battled with one of the top teams in the country so, obviously, we feel good about that," Head Coach Jennifer Gross said. "This last week for us really has been about growth and getting better, and the team we are today is better than the team we were last week."

Doherty hit on 7-of-15 from the field in 33 minutes, scoring 12 of those points in just 16 minutes of action in the first half. Her seven boards helped UC Davis to a 35-30 advantage on the glass, which included a 13-11 lead on the offensive boards. Junior Celia Marfone added a team-high eight rebounds, helping the Aggies lead on the board for only the fourth time in 11 contests this season.

Fipps added five rebounds to her point total, moving her past Paige Mintun and into fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,393. The Mariposa, California, native needs just 21 points to pass Jessica Campbell (2003-06, 2007-08) for third all-time and 25 more to take over second place, currently held by Staci Stevens (1985-88).

Bonnie Samuelson was joined in double figures by Kaylee Johnson, who finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with less than a minute to play. Meanwhile the Aggies' defense held leading scorers Lili Thompson (17.8 ppg) and Amber Orrange (12.5 ppg) to a combined 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting.

"We were using everybody, we were switching a lot, so I thought our posts did a good job just getting big and wide," Gross said. "For the most part, I thought we did a pretty good job of loading up the key, unfortunately, that left Bonnie open quite a bit and she made us pay tonight.

"Orrange and Thompson are just so quick and know how to get into the key. They distributed the ball nicely and, even though they didn't score themselves, they found their open shooters."

Trailing by six points in the early minutes of the first half, back-to-back baskets by Doherty and a three-pointer by Kelsey Harris sparked a 13-4 run over the next six minutes as UC Davis built its largest lead at 21-18 with just over eight minutes to play. Brianna Salvatore's two free throws and another basket inside by Doherty capped the run, as four different players had their hands in helping the Aggies take the lead.

Another pair of free throws by Doherty held UC Davis' adavantage at 23-20 two minutes later, but the Cardinal answered with a 14-4 burst, holding the Aggies to without a field goal for almost four minutes, and building a seven-point advantage, 32-25, with 3:20 remaining in the period.

Freshman Rachel Nagel (three-pointer) and Doherty sandwiched a pair of baskets around a lay-up by Kailee Johnson, and UC Davis got a stop on the defensive end thanks to a Doherty block to trail just 34-30 at the half.

Junior Celia Marfone cut the Cardinal advantage to just two points with a quick basket out of the break before Stanford gave itself some breathing room on a three-point play by Bonnie Samuelson and a basket by Kaylee Johnson. Back-to-back three-pointers by Harris and Fipps cut the deficit to a single point and the Aggies continued to reel Stanford back in after it looked like the Cardinal would pull away.

A three-point play by Doherty and a pair of free throws by Nagel brought UC Davis back to within three, and the Aggies trailed by only four points with 9:05 remaining in the contest before Stanford found its winning kick. Lili Thompson nailed a three-pointer to jumpstart the run as the Cardinal held UC Davis to just 2-of-7 from the field during the burst, building a 12-point advantage at 65-53 with 3:18 to go, and they never looked back.

Stanford shot just over 46 percent from the field for the game and just under 59 percent from beyond the arc en route to the win, while the Aggies hit on 41 percent from the floor, but were just 5-of-19 from long distance. Behind Doherty, UC Davis outscored the Cardinal in the paint, 34-22.

The Aggies now break for the holidays before returning to the court on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 4:30 p.m., hosting Menlo College to ring in the New Year at The Pavilion.
