Game Notes
DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis will look to continue its strong start when the Aggies end the first of two season-long three-game homestands Wednesday night against San José State. A victory will snap a four-game slide against the Spartans, give the Aggies their first win against SJSU in 39 seasons and the program's first 6-0 start since the 1912-13 season.
You read correctly, the first 6-0 start in 102 years.
Men's hoops will also host its annual toy drive Wednesday night; by donating a new unwrapped toy, UC Davis students will receive a YoloBerry gift card. Everyone else that brings at least one item with them to the Pavilion will receive discounted GA tickets. All proceeds will benefit Toys for Tots.
Series Record: San José State leads 15-7
Last UC Davis Win: 66-55; 1974-75 season
Last San José State Win: 89-85 (3ot); 12/17/13 in San Jose
Series Record: San José State +4
If victorious against the Spartans, this year's Aggie roster can accomplish something no other team in the 102-year history of the men's basketball program can claim: a 7-0 start to the season.
Idaho has claimed all three head-to-head matchups since the inaugural meeting in 2011; after a one-year hiatus, the Aggies will square off against the Vandals at the Cowan Spectrum in Moscow, Idaho Sunday afternoon. When the Aggies return from to Davis this weekend, the team will not compete in another road game for nearly two weeks as the team's Dec. 9 home matchup against Eastern Illinois is the only thing that stands between the Aggies and a 10-day hiatus. That break will end on Dec. 20 when UC Davis heads to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force
Series Record: Idaho leads 3-0
Last UC Davis Win: N/A
Last Idaho Win: 80-76; 11/30/13 in Davis
Series Record: Idaho +3

LET'S PLAY TWO!
This catchphrase applies to UC Davis basketball this season as the men and women will team up for three home doubleheaders this year.
When the men host Utah State (11/26) and Utah Valley (11/29), women's basketball will host Utah Valley and Pacific in respective matinée matchups. The final doubleheader will take place on Jan. 3, 2015, when the women host Menlo College at 2 p.m. before the men tip that evening against Cal Maritime.
'TIS THE SEASON
Men's basketball will partner with Toys for Tots and organize its annual toy drive on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when San José State visits the Pavilion.
By donating a new unwrapped toy, UC Davis students will receive a gift card to YoloBerry. Everyone else will receive an opportunity to purchase GA tickets for $8.
CLIMBING THE MID-MAJOR LADDER
On Nov. 24, UC Davis made its inaugural Division I appearance on CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Top 25 poll when the Aggies received one vote. This week, UC Davis received 14 votes. Only 13 teams separate men's basketball from Yale, ranked No. 25 in this week's edition.
JONAS SALK DEVELOPED THE FIRST EXPERIMENTALLY SAFE POLIO VACCINE, THE DODGERS PLAYED IN BROOKLYN AND THE COST OF A FIRST CLASS STAMP WAS $0.03
And all three took place in 1952 - the last time UC Davis men's basketball started the season with a 5-0 record.
By defeating Utah Valley last Saturday, the Aggies started their season with five straight victories for the first time in 62 years.
Hoops aficionados may argue that UC Davis won its first five games to start the 1965 season, and they are technically correct. HOWEVER, one of those five wins took place against a team comprised of Aggie alums in an exhibition matchup; that year's team lost its fifth game against an officially recognized opponent.
ADMIT IT, YOU ARE CURIOUS
With a win against San José State, UC Davis will sport its first 6-0 start in the program's history since the 1912-13 campaign and the first time as a NCAA-recognized athletics program.
By the way, 102 years ago when the Aggies last opened their season with six straight wins, William Taft was this country's president and World War I was still 19 months away from commencing.
UNGRACIOUS HOSTS
On Nov. 29 versus Utah Valley, UC Davis' defense forced the Wolverines to shoot .294 from the floor that evening. Dec. 30, 2008, was the last time an Aggie opponent shot less than 30 percent overall from the field when Dartmouth made 14 of its 51 shots and recorded a .275 mark.
TWO BIRDS WITH ONE GAME
In that same game against the Wolverines, senior guard Corey Hawkins shot 4-for-9 from three and earned three assists to record his 100th career three-point basket and assist.
MOVING THEIR FEET, NOT THEIR HANDS
Among all Big West Conference teams, UC Davis enters the week with the stingiest defense in the league. The Aggies are allowing opponents to score a league-low 54.2 points per game, six fewer points than UC Irvine, ranked No. 2 in this statistical category.
AGGIES CAPTURE A SPOT ON AN EXCLUSIVE LIST
With their 5-0 record entering Wednesday's game against San José State, the Aggies are one of 29 teams in the nation (through games played as of 12/1) to sport an undefeated mark.
UC DAVIS VS. THE NATION
The only thing more impressive than UC Davis' field goal percentage defense, Aggie opponents are .366 from the floor, is its own field goal percentage as men's basketball is an efficient .494 from the floor this season. UC Davis is ranked No. 36 among all Division I teams in field goal percentage defense and No. 28 in field goal percentage.
MODELS OF DISCIPLINE
Through its first five games, UC Davis has only committed 78 fouls - that total is the 24th-lowest total in the nation.
PROTECT THE ROCK
Among all 344 Division I teams, the Aggies rank among the top 50 in the category of fewest turnovers committed. UC Davis' 60 turnovers is the 44th-lowest total in the country.
FOLLOW THE LEADER
Senior guard Corey Hawkins is the first Aggie to receive Player of the Week accolades from the Big West this season after leading his team to consecutive road victories.
Responsible for more than 40 percent of his team's offense - he scored a combined 49 of UC Davis' 118 points - Hawkins helped the Aggies defeat Eastern Illinois and Furman to preserve their first-place standing as the league's only undefeated team when UC Davis embarked on its inaugural road trip of the season.
Against the Panthers, Hawkins finished 9 of 16 from the field, connected on 5 of 7 shots from three and scored the Aggies' final five points in their two-point win.
Two days later, Hawkins' clutch free throw with five seconds remaining extended his team's lead to three, forcing the Paladins (who had zero timeouts remaining) to travel from one end of the court to the other before heaving a desperation three-point shot to force overtime - an attempt that landed nowhere near its intended target.
For the week, Hawkins shot 17-for-30 (.567 pct.) overall and 9-for-14 (.643 pct.) from three, averaged 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING
Positive results earned at Eastern Illinois and Furman also marked the first time that UC Davis collected consecutive road wins since March of 2013 when men's basketball ended its league slate by defeating UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.
THE CAPTAIN(S) OF THIS SHIP
Head coach Jim Les chose four student-athletes to represent the team as its captains this season, those players are seniors Corey Hawkins, Avery Johnson, Tyler Les and Josh Ritchart.
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT FOR YEARS
This year's UC Davis senior class, comprised of guards Corey Hawkins, Avery Johnson, Tyler Les and swingman Josh Ritchart, are all fifth-year seniors. Hawkins and Johnson redshirted after transferring to UC Davis three and two years ago from Arizona State and San Francisco respectively; Les sat out last season as did Ritchart who received a medical redshirt after competing in a handful of games.
