Box Score

EDITOR'S NOTE: Following her 13 points against Arizona State, it was erroneously reported that senior Sydnee Fipps had passed Paige Mintun for fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list. Due to a clerical error on the author's part, Fipps was credited was four more points following the Aggies' game against Saint Mary's, causing the discrepancy. Fipps continues to stand fifth with 1,380 career points, still two back of Mintun on the all-time list, heading into Monday's game against nationally ranked Stanford. The author regrets the error and the following game recap has been amended to reflect the change.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- UC Davis senior forward Sydnee Fipps finished with a game-high 13 points, while junior Alyson Doherty hit double figures for the fifth consecutive game, but a 17-4 run by host Arizona State midway through the first half broke open a tight game en route to a 72-51 Sun Devils victory on Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz.

The loss was the fourth in the last five games for the Aggies, who fell to 4-6 overall in their final game before final exams next week. Arizona State, receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls entering the week, improved to 7-1 overall, shooting 52 percent from the floor for the game.

Fipps hit 6-of-12 from the floor and added three rebounds and a pair of steals in 29 minutes, reaching double figures for the eighth time in 10 contests overall this season. Doherty continued her hot shooting from the field, finishing 6-of-9 from the field for 12 points, while teammate Celia Marfone grabbed five rebounds to lead the team.

Sophie Brunner led three Sun Devils in double figures, scoring a team-high 12 points to go with eight rebounds. Katie Hempen (11) and Quinn Dornstauder (10) joined a balanced scoring effort that saw ASU use a pair of lengthy scoring runs to begin each half.

The Sun Devils opened the game with a 12-0 burst, holding the Aggies scoreless for the first 5:09 before Brianna Salvatore hit 1-of-2 from the line to snap the skid. Freshman Rachel Nagel then hit UC Davis' first field goal of the contest just over a minute later as the Aggies began to chip away.

A 12-2 run by UC Davis, capped by a three-point play from freshman Pele Gianotti, erased any memory of the slow start as the Aggies, who hit 5-of-5 from the floor during their run, climbed to within a pair, 14-12, with 11:28 to play. The streak hit 6-of-6 from the field on a basket by Doherty that kept UC Davis within striking distance before the Sun Devils' defense locked down and the offense heated up, scoring 15 of the next 17 points to build a 15-point lead and the home team never looked back.

The Aggies got back to within 10 points on a three-pointer and basket inside by Fipps out of the four-minute media timeout, by Arizona State scored eight consecutive points to grab a 42-28 lead at the break. The run that continued into the second half as the Sun Devils opened the period with an 11-0 run to go up, 53-28, just four minutes into the half, and UC Davis never got closer than 20 the rest of the way.

ASU forced the Aggies into 19 turnovers, turning those into 31 points, and used 10 offensive rebounds to net 17 second-chance scores.

UC Davis now takes a week off for final exams, returning to the court on Dec. 22 for a match-up with nationally ranked Stanford at Maples Pavilion. The Monday matinee tips-off at 2 p.m.
