DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior
Sydnee Fipps finished with 22 points while junior
Alyson Doherty added her third double-double of the season with a strong second half, but a late 18-0 run by host San Jose State erased a 12-point deficit, lifting the Spartans to an 89-75 win on Wednesday night at the Event Center.
The Aggies fell to 4-5 overall with the loss, shooting 43 percent from the floor, but held to just 39 percent after the break and 3-of-14 from beyond the arc in the second half. San Jose State improved to 5-4 overall, hitting on half of its shots (17-of-34) from the field in the second half and turning 22 UC Davis turnovers into 28 points.
Fipps reached the 20-point plateau for the fourth time this season and now stands just four back of Staci Stevens' school record of 31 career 20-point games. After hitting five three-pointers in the opening period, the Spartans' defense locked down on the senior, holding her to just seven in the second half.
That opened the door for Doherty, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds -- one off her career high on the glass -- hitting 10-of-19 from the field in 32 minutes. Senior Kelsey Harris added 14 points on four three-pointers and 5-of-7 from the field, while freshman Dani Nafekh tied a career-high with seven assists for the third time in her last four games.
Rebecca Woodberry's double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds led five Spartans in double figures.
Leading by seven points at the break, the Aggies eventually built their advantage to 12 points at 68-56 next-to-last media timeout with 8:17 to play, but could not regain their stroke from the field and San Jose State took full advantage. UC Davis went four-and-a-half minutes without a point as a jumper by Aniya Baker sparked the decisive run, that finished with the Spartans scoring 33 of the final 40 points in the contest.
The Aggies remain on the road this weekend, taking flight to Tempe, Arizona, to take on Arizona State in the first of two straight contests against Pacific-12 Conference powers. Tip-off for the clash with the Sun Devils is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. MT on Saturday (Dec. 13) from the Wells Fargo Arena on campus.
