Nov. 3, 2014 DAVIS, Calif. - Ryan Sypkens will return to the U.S. and continue his career in the NBA Development League after the Idaho Stampede selected the UC Davis alum in the third round of this year's draft.
Sypkens, one of eight players drafted by the Stampede, will report to training camp on Nov. 3 to prep for the team's season opener, at home against the Erie BayHawks, 11 days later.
The most successful three-point shooter in the history of the Big West Conference will head to Boise just two weeks after ending his season with Aguilas de Tunja, a professional team that competes in Colombia's DirectTV Basketball League.
During his stint abroad, Sypkens helped lead Aguilas to a second-place finish with a 12-8 record. The native of Elk Grove shot 40 percent from the field, 42.4 pct. from three, averaged 11 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. A regular in Tunja's starting lineup, Sypkens earned plenty of playing time throughout the season and logged 28.1 minutes per game - one of the team's top marks.
Sypkens' successful professional debut took place shortly after he received his undergraduate degree and capped a successful college career at UC Davis.
During his senior season, Sypkens joined an exclusive list of Aggie greats when he recorded his 1,000th career point against UC Davis' cross-Causeway nemesis.
Already the school's record holder for the most three-point field goals made in a single season (106) and career (220) entering his final year of eligibility, Sypkens completed his three-point hat trick by setting a new school mark for the most threes made in a single game in his team's final contest before the start of conference play.
On Jan. 2, 2014, Sypkens hit 10 of 14 shots from behind the arc to shatter a six-way tie and set a new school record. Entering that game, Sypkens, Corey Hawkins, Tyler Les and three others stood alongside one another in the program's records book with eight treys each.
As the 2013-14 season continued, the all-Big West recipient entrenched himself as the school's top shooter from distance and inched his way towards another career record.
In his penultimate appearance in a UC Davis uniform, he connected three times from behind the arc to become the Big West Conference's all-time three-point record holder. Two days later, he ended his career as an Aggies with 315 three-point field goals made.
In addition to Sypkens, the Stampede also drafted Tre Bussey, Quinton Doggett, Kodi Agustus, Nick Covington, Joel Wright, Shane Gibson and Tyrrel Tate.
