DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Sydnee Fipps shared game-high honors with a team-high 19 points while junior Alyson Doherty added her second double-double of the season, helping lift the host Aggies to a 59-49 victory over Utah Valley on Wednesday night at The Pavilion.
UC Davis evened its mark at 2-2 overall on the season, using a 12-0 second-half run to finally pull away after the Wolverines had closed to within four points with just over seven minutes to play. Utah Valley fell to 3-3 overall with the loss.
"Tonight, we're we without two point guards, we went to different lineups, different people stepped up," Head Coach Jennifer Gross said. "Taylor McGuire jumped in at the end, played tremendous down the stretch, defensively and offensively. It's comforting knowing that I can go to different lineups and we can get it done."
Fipps hit 7-of-12 from the floor in 27 minutes of play as her total moved her past former Aggie great Aimee Conner (1989-93) and into fifth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,278 points. Paige Mintun (2006-11) is next on the list with 1,382 career points in her brilliant UC Davis career.
In only her third game from injury, Doherty had a big second half en route to her double-double, scoring nine of her 10 points and grabbing nine of her career-high 12 rebounds after the break to help power the Aggies. She also finished with three blocks for the third consecutive game, giving her nine for the year and placing her just nine back of Ellen Porshneva (2003-06, 2007-08) for sixth all-time.
Mariah Seals finished with 19 points, including 5-of-9 shooting from the floor in the second half, to lead Utah Valley, while Rhaiah Spooner-Knight added 12 points in defeat. Karlee Norris grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for the Wolverines, who out-rebounded the Aggies, 37-31, for the game.
Leading by 11 at the break, UC Davis exploded for a brief 6-0 run that pushed its lead to 15 points at 43-28 with just over six minutes gone in the period. However, Utah Valley, which was 0-for-10 from the field at one point in the second half, found its touch, answering with a 7-0 burst of its own -- a run that grew to 15-4 over a six-minute span -- cutting the Aggies' advantage down to its lowest point since the start of the game at 47-43 with 7:25 to go.
Fipps stopped the bleeding with her third three-pointer of the night, sophomore Taylor McGuire followed with another from long distance, and UC Davis scored the next 12 points of the contest to put the game away.
Three-pointers by Seals and Taylor Gordon for the Wolverines were all the visitors could muster down the stretch, but they could come no closer that the final margin.
"Tonight, I felt, it was like a test for us," Gross said. "(Utah Valley) made a run with a few minutes to go after we had built up a little bit of a cushion and we really challenged our team to step up, defend, and make plays, and we did that."
The Aggies shot just over 41 percent from the field for the game -- their third consecutive game of shooting better than 40 percent from the floor -- and had 14 assists on their 21 makes. Utah Valley hit just 37 percent from the field, but only managed one trip to the line, hitting both free throws.
Following the holiday, UC Davis returns to the court on Saturday (Nov. 29) at 4:30 p.m., hosting former Big West Conference rival Pacific at The Pavilion.
