DAVIS, Calif. -- Lauren Nicholson's 12-foot runner with 1.8 seconds remaining broke a 55-all tie and lifted visiting Saint Mary's to a last-second 57-55 victory over host UC Davis in a non-conference clash on Saturday morning at The Pavilion.
The Aggies fell to 1-2 overall on the season despite shooting 44 percent from the field for the game and a 48 percent clip in the second half. The Gaels evened their record at 1-1 overall, dominating the glass to the tune of a 44-20 advantage overall and a 16-2 lead on the offensive end, leading to 17 second-chance points.
In a game that featured 10 ties and 17 lead changes -- including exchanging leads 11 times in a nip and tuck second half -- senior Kelsey Harris and junior Celia Marfone each had game-tying baskets in the final two minutes as both teams missed go-ahead three-point attempts in the final minute. With just 28 seconds remaining in the game, the Gaels went the length of the court, holding for the last shot, before giving it to Nicholson on the left side.
The guard then curled in from the elbow and took her shot from just outside the key, dropping it through for the two-point lead. The two teams exchanged timeouts before the inbounds pass, a Hail Mary that was intercepted at mid-court by Saint Mary's as time expired.
Harris finished with a season-high 15 points on five three-pointers, adding three rebounds in 32 minutes. Junior Alyson Doherty reached double figures for the second straight contest, adding 14 points, three rebounds, and three blocks in 27 minutes.
Shannon Mauldin led three Gaels in double figures with 18 points to go with five rebounds and four assists, while Stella Beck added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds -- seven of those on the offensive end. Nicholson finished with 13 points.
UC Davis jumped out of the gates quickly from long range as four of its first five makes from the field were three-pointers, staking the home team to an early eight-point lead. The Aggie shooters then went cold, missing eight straight shots while Saint Mary's responded with a 7-0 run spanning four-plus minutes to take its first lead of the game, 15-14, on a basket inside by Carli Rosenthal midway through the half.
Back-to-back baskets by Harris (a three-pointer) and Doherty put the Aggies back in front, but a basket by Beck and a three from Nicholson brought the Gaels back as the two teams exchanged scores the rest of the way, with UC Davis hanging on to a slim, 27-26, lead at the break.
Neither team led by more than two points in the first eight minutes of the second period, as the lead changed hands six times in that span alone. A three-pointer by junior Lauren Beyer, who finished with nine points on 4-of-6 from the floor in 11 minutes, gave the Aggies their largest lead of the half, but a 7-0 spurt by Saint Mary's -- capped by a Nicholson jumper -- gave the Gaels their largest lead of the game, 42-38, with 9:27 to play.
Doherty scored four straight points to get UC Davis close, and the Aggies regained the lead on a three-pointer by Sydnee Fipps with 7:23 to play -- her first field goal of the contest -- making it 45-43 with 7:23 to go. Both teams went back-and-forth from there, with a pair of ties and three lead changes over the next five minutes, setting up the dramatic finish.
The Aggies return to the court for a pair of doubleheaders around the Thanksgiving holiday, hosting Utah Valley on Wednesday (Nov. 26) at 4:45 p.m., before welcoming former conference rival Pacific on Saturday (Nov. 29) at 4:30 p.m. Please note the time change for Saturday's game against the Tigers, from the originally scheduled time of 2 p.m.
