Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Holland Seymour tied her career high of 13 kills in her first start of the 2014 season while sophomore Kendall Frisoli picked up 11 digs in her first season start at libero, but Long Beach State's heavy hitting in the middle took over in the third set in a 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 victory over the Aggies during Big West Conference women's volleyball action at the Pavilion Thursday night.

The Aggies snap their five-match winning streak to slip to 15-12 overall and 10-4 in conference matches. The 18th-ranked 49ers improve to 23-4 for the year and remain undefeated in Big West play at 13-0.

Seymour, filling in for the injured Allie Wegener on the left side, posted a career-high 31 swings in her first start since Oregon State last season. She also matched Frisoli's digs total of 11. Junior outside hitter Kaylin Squyres produced another double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs. Senior middle blocker Katie Quinn was arguably UC Davis' top attacker, tallying eight kills with just one error for a .412 clip.

For the Beach, senior Chisom Okpala notched a match-high 12 kills and hit .318. Freshman Ashley Murray added 6-for-13 attacking for a .462 average while senior outside hitter Bre Mackie contributed nine kills and a .350 success rate. The 49ers also performed on defense, with setter Jenelle Hudson leading all players with 21 digs and Murray figuring on seven of her team's 11.0 blocks. The combination of Mackie, Brinke and Murray was particularly effective in the third set, combining for 10-0-16 (.625) hitting to complete the match sweep.

Neither team yielded much ground in the early part of the first set, with UC Davis taking the first two-point lead by either team at 11-9. A Squyres tool raised the margin to 14-11, but Long Beach responded with five straight to take a 16-14 edge. The 49ers pulled ahead to as much as 21-16 when Okpala tapped down a stray free ball. The Aggies then stumbled to two of their nine attack errors in the first set, one on a Murray block assist. Alex Reid's roll shot delivered the first-set win for the 49ers.

Long Beach continued its momentum into the second, crafting an 11-6 start, only to have UC Davis whittle away at the deficit. Sophomore Kendall Walbrecht posted a pair of kills in a comeback run that tied the frame at 14-14 but the 49ers responded with seven of the next nine. Bre Mackie downed a kill from the right side to establish a 24-21 set point. UC Davis rallied for two to come within a single tally, but a service error granted LBSU the 25th point and the 2-0 match lead.

The second set featured a combined 50 digs. Freshman opposite Anete Brinke had eight of those touches to lead Long Beach, while sophomore libero Kendall Frisoli picked up seven on the UC Davis side. As a result, both teams failed to reach the .200 plateau in the frame: LBSU at .196, UC Davis at .154.

The 49ers broke loose from an early 8-8 tie in the third to forge ahead to a 13-9 edge, then moved out to a 18-13 advantage behind two kills each from Murray and Okpala at the center of the tape. The Aggies managed to battle back to within three on back-to-back kills from Seymour, bringing the score to 21-18. However, Mackie enjoyed a solo stuff near UC Davis' left pin for the 23rd point, then put away the final two points on kills on her left side of the net.

The Aggies managed just two aces and two team blocks in the loss. However, Frisoli's passing game offered another bright spot: she had 30 of her team's 68 serve receptions without allowing an ace.

UC Davis will honor its seniors in its season home finale Saturday night against Cal State Northridge. The match start time is 5 p.m., with the hopes that it will draw fans from that day's rivalry football game with Sacramento State.
