Nov. 14, 2014 FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman attacker Cory Laidig scored four goals while Spencer Galli and Chris Richardson each added two more, helping 14th-ranked UC Davis hold on against Fresno Pacific in a Western Water Polo Association men's game at Sunnyside Aquatics Complex Friday evening.
The Aggies improve to 14-16 for the season and 3-2 in WWPA play, although this contest does not count toward the conference tournament seeding due to FPU's reclassification status. The Sunbirds slip to 10-13 overall and 1-5 in league.
Laidig netted one goal in the first quarter, two in the second, then one in the fourth for his game-high output. Galli and Richardson also hit goals to help UC Davis to a 4-1 start through the first seven minutes of play.
Junior driver Daniel Seymour led FPU with three goals while Danny Shunichev added another two. Sophomore goalie Dillon Robinson tallied seven saves for the Sunbirds, three more than his Aggie counterpart, Spencer Creed.
UC Davis held a 4-2 lead after one frame and amassed a 6-3 edge late in the second after Laidig hit a natural goal and a power-play score. Shunichev converted a 6-on-5 goal of his own to cut the lead to 6-4 at the break.
Fresno Pacific managed to battle all the way back to a 7-7 tie, equalizing on Seymour's goal on the opening possession of the fourth. However, UC Davis restored its lead on Laidig's fourth goal of the game on the next possession, then expanded the margin to two when sophomore Jacob Ley delivered at the 6:31 mark.
Seymour and Richardson traded goals midway through the finale to set the board at its final state of 10-8.
Michael Wright accounted for the Aggies' 10th goal, converting an extra-man opportunity in the first minute as part of his team's quick start.
UC Davis concludes its regular season with a WWPA game at No. 17 Santa Clara Sunday. First sprint is noon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
