DAVIS, Calif. - Tom Johnson, a former PGA Tour professional and Big Ten Freshman of the Year who was a two-time All-American honorable mention at Northwestern, has been named assistant coach with the UC Davis men's golf team, it's been announced by head coach Cy Williams.

Johnson replaces 10-year assistant Todd Hammond who will move into a new role as administrative assistant.

Johnson, whose brother Will was a four-year starter for the Aggies and a Div. II All-American in 2000, brings an extensive golf resumè as both an amateur and professional. Johnson was a two-time Northern California Golf Association Junior champion, won the 1998 California State Junior Championship in 1998 and was runner-up a year later.

He played collegiately at Northwestern alongside Luke Donald, one of the world's top golfers, posting five top-10 finishes in 2000-01 to earn the Big Ten's top freshman honor. He went on to compile a 72.79 stroke average, earn two All-America nods and three All-Big Ten awards. Johnson's stroke average is currently fourth all-time at Northwestern

Johnson also had three top-10 showings, including a third-place, at The Prestige at PGA WEST, the annual tournament co-hosted by UC Davis and Stanford in La Quinta. His coach, Pat Goss, said Johnson "was as talented a player we've had at Northwestern."

"We're thrilled to bring someone of Tom's caliber to UC Davis," said Williams. "His experience competing at the highest levels of golf and alongside some of the best golfers in the world will be a tremendous asset to our program. Tom has a natural love for coaching and teaching and combining that with his familiarity with the Aggies makes him a great fit."

Johnson has played in eight USGA championships as well as the British Amateur Championship. He played on the PGA Tour in 2007, competing in 27 events and has nearly $200,000 in career winnings as a pro. Johnson's also played four seasons on the Nationwide Tour.

Williams is excited to keep Hammond as part of the Aggie golf staff.

"We're really excited that Todd is staying on the staff as he moves into the Administrative Assistant position," he said. "He's been such a huge part of our success the 10 years he's been in the assistant coach position and it's very important that we keep him on board. He is an invaluable part of the Aggie men's golf program."

The Aggies finished the fall portion of their 2014-15 season in mid-October and will resume competition on Feb. 5-7 at the Ameri Ari Invitational in Hawaii. The Aggies are currently ranked 60th by Golfstat.
