No. 2 Stanford dispatches No. 11 Aggies

Oct. 5, 2014 DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman goalkeeper Spencer Creed posted 11 saves while senior Chris Richardson and junior Sean Grab each tallied two goals, but 11th-ranked UC Davis could not keep pace with No. 2 Stanford, falling by a 17-5 final in men's collegiate water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center on Sunday.

The Cardinal improves to 12-1 for the year. The Aggies slip to 7-8.

Richardson had both of his goals on 6-on-5 chances in each of the first two quarters while Grab connected from the outside in each of the third and fourth frames. Junior Austin Beckwith added the fifth UC Davis goal with his power-play conversion early in the fourth. Creed notched nine of his saves before halftime, including three against the Stanford counterattack.

Junior Bret Bonanni, member of the U.S. Senior National Team, led the Cardinal with five goals. Senior utility Alex Bowen added three goals, all in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. B.J. Churnside and Adam Abdulhamid added two each.

UC Davis hung tough defensively in the opening quarter, getting on the board with 1:09 left when Beckwith assisted Richardson for the power-play goal. The Aggies nearly equalized on their next possession when Jacob Ley's picturesque sweep shot barred straight down but could not roll into the cage. Instead, Jackson Kimbell scored on a rebound and putback in the final seconds of the frame, sending Stanford to a 3-1 lead.

Richardson hit his second goal with three minutes left before halftime, but Bonanni's 6-on-5 goal from the 1 spot ignited what became a run of four unanswered through the break. Stanford led 7-2 after two quarters and 9-2 early in the third.

The second half was marred by three double exclusions, a double yellow card and a double game misconduct as the Cardinal piled on six goals in the third and four in the fourth. In all, the two teams combined for 31 major fouls -- 29 of which came after the five-minute mark in the second quarter.

UC Davis hits the road for a rare midweek game, taking on Cal Baptist for its Western Water Polo Association opener on Thursday. The Aggies then head to UCLA for the SoCal Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Center.
