Oct. 19, 2014 DAVIS, Calif. - Senior utility Chris Richardson scored five goals while freshman goalkeeper Spencer Creed tallied 14 saves to lead 12th-ranked UC Davis ride a 9-3 halftime lead to a 13-8 win over Concordia University of Irvine in men's collegiate water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 9-12 for the year. The Eagles, among those receiving votes in Wednesday's national coaches' poll, falls to 6-11 overall.

Richardson scored three of his five goals within the first three minutes of play. Junior Sean Grab and sophomore Jacob Ley each added two goals for UC Davis. Freshman Jacob Saduddin led CUI with two goals, both in the final quarter in which the Eagles put up four goals to the Aggies' one.

UC Davis crafted a 5-2 lead through the first quarter, a 9-3 edge at halftime and a 11-3 margin by midway through the third quarter. Richardson stormed out of the gates with two goals in the first 40 seconds of action, then completed his hat trick on a 6-on-5 chance with 5:46 remaining in the first. Grab, who assisted Richardson on the power play, fired in goals from the two spot at the 4:23 and 1:11 marks to extend the margin to 5-1.

Meanwhile, Creed tallied seven saves in that opening quarter, foiling Eagle attempts from both the perimeter and from two meters. He added three more in the second quarter as UC Davis added to its lead. Cory Laidig made it 6-2 with his goal from nearby the right post after a 6-on-5 chance had lapsed. After Jake Snyder answered for Concordia, the Aggies ripped off three unanswered: Ley on a cross-cage assist from Wes Lincoln, Nicholson on a bar-in shot out of two meters, and Richardson on a counterattack following Nicholson's perimeter field block.

The Aggie lead hit its apex of 11-3 after 6-on-5 goals from Richardson and freshman Shawn Welch. Ley also converted a power play in the fourth for his second goal, but CUI managed four scores in that final period. Saduddin had two of those Eagle goals, burying an outside shot with jus under six minutes to go then getting a skip shot to lob over Creed's left hand with 1:53 left.

This is the third time Richardson has scored five or more goals in a game this season. He raises his season total to 40 and his career tally to 198, looking to become just the second player in modern program history to hit the double-century mark.

The Aggies return to action for a rare Thursday night contest, taking on Air Force in their second Western Water Polo Association date. Game time is 7 p.m. at Schaal.
