The Aggies close out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 9-5 record. The Roadrunners fall to 7-6 overall.
Lee committed no hitting errors in 19 swings for the match. Squyres recorded seven of her final kills total in the fourth set. Junior Katie Quinn contributed 10 kills and a .348 average while junior Valerie Brain finished with nine and .304 in those categories. Senior setter Jenny Woolway led three Aggie players with double-digit digs. She had 17 while senior Devon Damelio and junior Megan Lancaster each posted 14.
For the 'Roadrunners, the tandem of sophomore opposite Kelsee Sawyer and junior middle Molly O'Hagan combined for 41 kills and a .380 clip. Junior libero Mariah Alvidrez led all players with 28 digs, with a whopping 14 in Bakersfield's first-set victory.
The first three sets saw a total of 33 ties and 14 lead changes, with teams rarely holding more than a three-point lead. Sawyer finished with 8-for-18 attacking while O'Hagan chipped in 5-for-8 offense to supplement Alvidrez' defensive numbers. Sawyer posted two kills in a 4-0 run that boosted Bakersfield to a 19-15 lead, but Lee hit a pair of her own amidst an Aggie comeback to 20-20. Sawyer and redshirt freshman Star Tucker-Campbell delivered the two winners down the stretch.
In the second set, aces by senior Lindsay Dowd and Devon Damelio highlighted an early 13-10 UC Davis lead, but 'Runner senior Debora Araujo notched two kills to flip the scoreboard to a 15-14 Bakersfield lead. Lee, who had five blocks and two kills in the second set, helped the Aggies reverse the proceedings back to a 21-18 lead. Woolway's tip lifted UC Davis to a 23-20 lead, Brain's offspeed kill made it 24-22, then big digs by Lancaster and freshman Kendall Frisoli helped the Aggies force a CSUB blocking violation for the 25th point.
The Roadrunners piled up a 6-1 run midway in the third to craft an 18-14 lead, then stumbled through two attack errors and an illegal set to allow their hosts back to a 19-19 tie. UC Davis took its first lead in a 16-point span with CSUB hit one into the tape, tipping the board to 21-20 in the Aggies' favor. Squyres immediately followed the ensuing timeout with an ace, then another strong serve led to a back-row blocking violation, stretching the lead to three. The 'Runners fought back to forge a 24-24 tie on a timely kill from O'Hagan and a pair of Aggie attacking errors. Quinn righted the ship with her successful tip at 25-24, and another fumbled Bakersfield set closed out the third with UC Davis in a 2-1 match lead.
The Aggies continued their momentum into the fourth while the 'Runners seemed to stall. Quinn sparked a 7-3 start with a pair of consecutive block assists, then later Squyres had four kills in a span of seven points to stretch the lead to 17-9. Bakersfield managed to battle back to a three-point deficit when Araujo's toll made it 18-15. However, that proved to be the smallest deficit in the final stretch: Quinn and Squyres each tallied two kills as UC Davis scored seven of the next 10 in the match.
Bakersfield's hitting averages declined steadily throughout the match: .286, .217, 200 and .171. Meanwhile, UC Davis enjoyed its highest efficiency (.333) and side-out conversion rates (68 percent) in that fourth frame.
The Aggies begin Big West Conference play with a match at Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
