Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior attacker Elizabeth Datino scored on a second-chance crease roll with 2.5 seconds remaining in overtime to lift UC Davis to a 15-14 upset of 14th-ranked Stanford in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse Senior Night finale at Aggie Stadium Thursday night.

The Aggies finish their season at 6-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Cardinal move to 10-5 for the year and 5-2 in MPSF games.

Thursday's win marks UC Davis' first over Stanford since a 16-13 home victory on April 2, 2000, ending a streak of 19 straight losses in the series. It also represents the first time the Aggies have ever defeated a team ranked in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division I Top 20.

Datino led UC Davis with five goals while junior Carly Voris tallied a career-high four. Senior Hannah Mirza, sophomore Elizabeth Landry and sophomore Meghan Jordan each added two scores. Landry also recorded four assists for six total points while Jordan chipped in another three. Sophomore goalkeeper Kai Murphy recorded 11 saves.

For Stanford, sophomore attacker Kyle Fraser matched Datino's total of five goals. Sophomore Hannah Farr and freshman Julia Burns each posted three goals with an assist. Junior goalkeeper Lyndsey Munoz finished with 11 saves.

Although Farr drew first blood with her unassisted goal just 75 seconds into the contest, UC Davis seized an early lead with three unanswered through the 10th minute. The Cardinal managed to cut the lead to a single goal on two different occasions in the first half. The Aggies clung to a 5-4 lead at halftime.

Fraser completed her hat trick a minute into the second half to tie the game at 5-5, but Datino and Voris each scored two goals in a 6-1 run that put UC Davis ahead by an 11-6 margin with roughly 20 minutes remaining. Then Stanford answered with a 7-1 run during the next 12 minutes to take a 13-12 lead.

Freshman Mary Doyle won a key draw control in the 57th minute to set the stage for the equalizer, with Jordan assisting Mirza for the Aggies' 13th goal with 1:56 remaining in regulation.

Ozer put the Cardinal up by one immediately in the extra frame, scoring on an eight-meter chance after Megan Lerner won the initial draw. Stanford gained possession on the next draw but Doyle's steal against Fraser gave the Aggies possession and a chance to tie. Munoz stopped a pair of UC Davis shots but Stanford never regained the ball before the changeover at the 63rd minute.

With a minute left to play and the Cardinal still up by a goal, an Aggie turnover put the ball into Munoz' stick in the crease. But her teammate Rachel Kalick dropped an outlet pass just a few yards behind Stanford's own restraining line. Mirza pounced on the loose ball, then assisted Jordan for a game-tying goal with 53 seconds remaining in overtime.

Senior Anna Geissbuhler collected the next draw to allow UC Davis to play for one final shot. With five seconds remaining, Mirza missed wide in what appeared to send the game to a sudden-victory period. But Geissbuhler won the ground ball, flipped to Datino, who rolled around the left side of the cage and popped in the winner.

UC Davis outshot its guest by a 32-30 margin, including 5-1 in overtime. The Aggies also outdrew the Cardinal by a 17-15 margin despite giving up five of seven during Stanford's comeback run in the second half.

Individually, Doyle recorded a monster defensive effort with game highs of four caused turnovers and six ground balls. Mirza led the Aggies with five draw controls while sophomore defender Sara Quero added three more steals.

Thursday's game also marked the farewell for five UC Davis seniors: Datino, Mirza, Geissbuhler, Alekna and Stephanie Guercio. Datino finishes her career with 149 goals and a school-record 96 assists for 245 points. She wraps her career as the No. 2 all-time UC Davis leader in goals and total points.

Mirza's final totals come to 136 goals, fourth in school history, and a school-benchmark 170 draw controls. Geissbuhler wraps up her career with 53 assists, also among all-time Aggie leaders.
