Aggies Fall To Mids In Lacrosse Clash

March 27, 2013

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Despite hat tricks from senior Elizabeth Datino and sophomore Elizabeth Landry, UC Davis was ultimately dispatched by No. 18/14 Navy, 19-11, in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The Aggies fall to 3-6 overall. The Mids, ranked 18th in the national coaches' poll and 14th in the media poll, improve to 11-1.

Besides the six total goals from Datino and Landry, UC Davis also had two from senior Hannah Mirza and freshman Mary Doyle, plus another from junior Carly Voris. Datino, Mirza, Voris and Stephanie Guercio also had one assist apiece. Sophomore Kai Murphy tallied 10 saves, covering the Aggie cage for all but about four minutes of the contest.

For Navy, sophomore Loren Generi tied a program record with eight goals and won 11 of her team's 17 draw controls while junior Aimee Gennaro added five goals and an assist. Jasmine DePompeo contributed three goals and seven assists for a game-high 10 points.

UC Davis battled tough in the early going, as Datino and Mirza scored in succession after Navy had taken a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes. Voris, who had assisted Mirza for that equalizer, scored a goal of her own in the 15th minute to close the Mids' gap to 5-3. Datino and Landry each hit unassisted strikes to cut the deficit to three later in the opening half, but Generi netted three straight - two on eight-meter chances - to help Navy extend its lead to 11-6 at the break.

The Mids broke away early in the second half, with Gennaro figuring on a goal and an assist in a 5-1 run during the first seven minutes. Datino posted an assist to Landry and an unassisted goal down the final stretch, but UC Davis never cut the margin by less than seven after halftime.

The Academy outshot its guest by a 34-22 overall margin, although the difference was greatly reduced (14-12) during the second half. Doyle led the Aggies with six draw controls while Landry and Mirza each won four. Defender Colleen McGee, a native of Annapolis playing less than two miles from her high school alma mater of St. Mary's, posted two ground balls and a steal in front of her hometown crowd.

UC Davis finishes its Spring Break road trip with a Saturday afternoon game at Drexel. Game time is 1:30 p.m. Pacific. That contest largely represents a homecoming for first-year head coach Kate Henwood, an alumna of La Salle University who starred (and later coached) at Garnet Valley High School in Glen Mills.
