Hokies Roll To 16-7 Win Over Aggies

March 12, 2013

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman midfielder Ellie Delich recorded four goals and a pair of draw controls but Virginia Tech's first-half fireworks proved too much for UC Davis to overcome, as the Aggies lost 16-7 to the Hokies in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

UC Davis loses its fourth straight, falling to 1-5 for the year. Tech evens its season record to 4-4.

Besides Delich's first career hat trick, junior midfielder Carly Voris chipped in a goal and an assist. Senior Hannah Mirza and sophomore Elizabeth Landry accounted for the remaining scoring. Elizabeth Datino, Anna Geissbuhler and Meghan Jordan each had one assist.

Hokie sophomore attacker Megan Will led all scorers with six goals, while senior Brooke Martin and sophomore Meg Bartley each added four.

Both teams struggled out of the gates, combining for six turnovers before managing a single shot. Will drew first blood with her eight-meter goal in the eighth minute, then freshman Meghan Macera made it 2-0 with her goal just 49 seconds later. The Aggies got on the board in the 11th minute when sophomore Allie Lehner broke up Jessi Thon's pass attempt in the VT attacking third. That possession led to a Landry goal on the other end after a quick transition downfield.

However, the Hokies continued to pull away in the first half, with Will scoring two goals in a 5-1 run during the next 10 minutes, stretching the VT lead to 7-2. Datino assisted Voris in the 22nd minute to interrupt the Hokies' offensive onslaught, but Tech responded with three straight to finish the period. Will and Bartley scored two more goals early in the second half to bump the 10-3 halftime lead to a nine-goal margin.

Delich scored three of her four goals in the second half but UC Davis never closed the gap by less than eight for the remainder of the game.

Tech outshot UC Davis by a 28-15 edge and won 14 of the game's 25 draws, including 9 of 14 before the break. The Hokies also made the most of their eight-meter opportunities, shooting 4-for-9 from the arc.

Lehner led the Aggies defensively with two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Freshman Mary Doyle picked up three ground balls, won two draw controls and drew a charge.
