March 10, 2013

Final Stats

BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior Elizabeth Datino tallied four goals and three assists, including three total points in a 4-1 Aggie start, but UC Davis ultimately was unable to hold off California's explosive offense in an 18-12 loss during Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Memorial Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies fall to 1-4 for the year and remain winless in conference play at 0-3. The Golden Bears even their record to 2-2 overall and move to 2-0 in MPSF contests.

Senior midfielder Hannah Mirza also had four goals to match Datino, while Elizabeth Landry, Carly Voris, Meghan Jordan and Ellie Delich each scored one.

For California, senior midfielder Megan Takacs tallied six goals with four draw controls. Senior attacker Melissa Humphrey added four more while junior Paige Gasparino and sophomore Gaby Christman each netted three. Amelia Burke led all players with eight draw controls, although UC Davis won the team battle in that category, 18-13.

Datino totaled three points during UC Davis' initial burst during the first four minutes. She had two unassisted goals plus she fed Voris on a quick-stick shot just 3:17 into the game. Takacs and Humphrey later responded with back-to-back goals in the seventh and ninth minutes to the cut Aggie lead to 4-3 before Delich and Jordan responded with consecutive scores, pushing the margin back to three.

However, Cal scored five unanswered to finish the half, turning the 6-3 deficit to an 8-6 lead at the break. The Aggies committed four turnovers and shot 0-for-2 during their 16-minute scoreless stretch.

Datino assisted Mirza in the fourth minute after halftime but again the Bears responded with string of goals. Humphrey punched in two of a 5-0 run from the 35th through 42nd minutes, extending the lead to 13-7. UC Davis then rallied to four of the next five goals, with Datino and Mirza each finding the net twice. The Aggies closed the gap to 14-11 with just less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half.

Nonetheless, Cal responded with four goals during a six-minute stretch to effectively seal the contest. Paige Gasparino had a goal and an assist during that run, with her lone dime going to sister Brynn Gasparino.

California outshot its guest by a 37-25 margin and committed just six turnovers to UC Davis' 13.

The Aggies return to action for home games against Virginia Tech and Iona on Tuesday and Friday. Both games start at 4 p.m. at Aggie Stadium.
