SEATTLE, Wash. - UC Davis' Ashley Marshall broke her own school record in the 60-meter dash twice on Saturday at the University of Washington Husky Classic, lowering the mark to 7.35 seconds while winning the event at the highly competitive indoor track and field meet.

She was one of two Aggies to advance to the 60-meter final after teammate Melanise Chapman finished third in a career-best tying 7.52 seconds, the same as her time in the prelims. Sophomore Veronica Smart finished ninth in the shot put with a mark of 13.76 meters (45 feet, 1.75) - a mark that makes her fourth all-time at UC Davis to help lead the field events crew.

Cekarri Nixon had a strong time of 55.87 seconds in the 400, putting her second all-time. The Aggies capped the day with a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay in 3:48.55.

"Our women sprinters again provided the prominent spark for the our squad at UW," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. " Ashley Marshall turned out two great 60-meter races, including an event win, with Melanise Chapman a close third.

"Cekarri Nixon ran close to her lifetime PR in the 400 despite not being pushed in her heat, and we ended the day with a marked improvement in the 4x400 while also showing some versatility in our personnel there."

Marshall set the school record in the 60-meter dash two weeks ago at the UW Invitational, finishing fifth in 7.51 seconds. She then lowered it to 7.45 during the prelims on Saturday when she easily won heat. Chapman joined her in the final after her time of 7.52 seconds proved to the third-fastest of the 45 competitors.

Marshall then squashed the record in the finals, winning her heat in 7.35 seconds while Chapman equaled her fast prelim time and took third. Leslie Reed also had a PR in the prelims, crossing in 7.79 seconds.

Kayla Carter had a PR in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.94 during the prelim heats and moving from No. 5 all-time at UC Davis to No. 3. Lauren Wallace jumped to No. 3 in the mile after her time of 4:56.85.

Smart helped provide the highlights in the field events with her showing in the shot put.

"Off the track, Veronica Smart provided a bright spot with a mark that puts her in the all-time list for the shot put among good company," Wartenburg said.

The Aggies will remain in Seattle for more competition on Sunday when the compete in the Husky Open.

"It's an opportunity for us to get a look at some people in different events while using the day as a training stimulus at the same time," said Wartenburg.
