FRESNO, Calif. - Led by Ashley Marshall's school record in the 55-meter dash and Kayla Carter's school mark in the 55 hurdles, UC Davis indoor track and field sprinters enjoyed a successful Sunday at the Run for the Dream Invitational at Save Mart Center.
The previous 55-meter record of 7.30 seconds, set by Kelli Enos in 2003, was first erased by Melanise Chapman during the event's prelims when she won her section in 6.96 seconds. Marshall then lowered it to 6.86 seconds five sections later.
Marshall then advanced to the final where she crossed in 6.83 seconds, establishing the school record. In fact, the top four spots on the program's all-time top-five list are now occupied by Aggie sprinters from Sunday's meet. Chapman (6.93) is second and is followed by Janay Pierce (7.11) and Cekarri Nixon (7.22). UC Davis advanced four runners to the final at Run for the Dream.
Carter followed with a record-breaking performance in the 55 hurdles, winning her section in 8.30 sections and eclipsing the mark of 8.38 set by Gretchen Haussler in 2006. Carter advanced to the final where she was fifth in 8.31 seconds. Kira Rienecker, who placed ninth in the final, moved to No. 3 all-time after going 8.46 in the prelims.
In the field events, Sarah Hussey improved one spot to No. 4 on the all-time list after finishing seventh in the weight throw at 16.11 meters (52 feet, 10.25 inches). Veronica Smart was third in the shot put (13.70m, 44-11.50) while Praise Adesida (12.89m, 42-03.50) was fourth.
UC Davis will now turn its attention to the outdoor portion of its 2013 season which opens at the Chico State Multi-Meet on Feb. 28.
