SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Sophomore Jonny Baxter fired back-to-back rounds of par-70 on Monday to lead the UC Davis men's golf team which is 18th after two rounds of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick North Golf Course.
UC Davis opened with a 3-over 283 in the first round before later shooting 286 for a 9-over 569. The Aggies are just one shot behind New Mexico State (568), which is 17th, and only two back of 16th-place Northern Colorado (567).
Baxter's rounds were his second-lowest of the season and paced an Aggie team that has both Matt Seramin and Luke Vivolo tied for 51st at 2-142, Matt Hansen tied for 77th at 5-over 145 and Josh Granger tied for 102nd at 8-over 148.
Colorado State's Mike Wuertz had a pair of 64's on Monday for a 12-under 128 total and a three-shot lead over both Ben Juffer of Kansas State and Beau Schoolcraft of Colorado. Vivolo had a 1-under 69 in Monday's first round - the best UC Davis score of the day - before coming back with a 73 in the afternoon. He's tied on the leaderboard with Seramin who put together rounds of 72 and 70. Hansen shot 72 in the morning and 73 in the afternoon while Granger carded 74's in each round.
San Diego and Kansas State are tied atop the team leaderboard at 15-under 545 with Colorado State two shots behind at 13-under 547. Colorado (552) and Arizona (555) round out the top five.
The tournament concludes at the 7,133-yard course with 18 holes on Tuesday morning.
